Topic: St. Paul & the Broken Bones

I keep expecting ahsmith33 to comment about this band he brought to the Forum's attention, but decided to renege my declaration about no more topics.  This band is that good, maybe his best shout other than his homage to Eric Gale.

I've picked up the first two St. Paul albums and they stack up closely to any soul/blues albums I've ever listened to.  The freaky thing is the lead singer could be a double for a close friend of mine.  Their first album was for the most part recorded live at Fame Studio in Muscle Shoals.  It has an Alabama Shakes feel to it, but SPatBBs are way more earthy and more talented.  That first album really grabs you from the first note.

Their second album, Sea of Noise, is much more refined and in my opinion one of the best I've heard of this genre.  Although not as talented a band like The Main Squeeze, the Broken Bones are no slouch playing their instruments.  Paul Janeway's like the second coming of Otis Redding or Al Green.

There are a lot of videos out there of the band.  This one is more recent and includes a different guitarist.  The set is acoustic versions of earlier songs plus a little discussion of Paul's influences.  Again very polished vocals.

A week ago or so I mentioned I might go to St. Louis to see St. Paul and the Broken Bones today, but that has been cancelled due to my wife suffering an ischemic stroke last Saturday.  It's been a pretty hectic week, but we're making progress towards her recovery.  I've had to step up from my own disabilities and I'm happy I can.

Getting back to the band, I'm a bit surprised no one has bothered to comment one way or the other.  This music has been quite therapuetic for the stress that surrounds me and my wife.  As I've stated recently this will be my last music shout after 14 years on the forum.  I'll probably comment to other peoples posts as my friend Mike Craggs and Tres Smith are still enlightening all of us.

Must admit, been a bit distracted over here, these past few weeks, but not enough that I haven't been dropping by and keeping an eye (or ear) out

Have to say, another "top pick" from brother Curby with this Soul/Blues fusion combo: I've had fun poking around, especially on YouTube, and was stunned to find this clip from this side of the pond, from about 5 years back. Stunning performance that begs, why aren't these guys better known?

I enjoyed the Bowie cover, but that song is not on their Alien Coast album.  It might be included in a special edition vinyl version, but not on their CD release.
Like any talented band, the music evolves and members come and go.  St. Paul is no exception.  Their last two albums are far removed from the earliest recordings, but still interesting.  Moonage Daydream prooves the creative spark is still there and they're able to make it their own with the brass section.  I believe DB would have dug this......

Ordered myself the Sea of Noise and Half The City albums (whenever they arrive, with strikes and holidays here). Had a look at the Young Sick Camelia album; maybe later, but looking at the track titles, if you didn't know better, you'd swear it was a prog-rock album....
