Topic: Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi - Soul Stew Revival

I know there are Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi fans on this site.  Anybody else seen this show or plan to see this show?

I opened my email alert from HOB - Orlando and I was so pleased to see that Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi along with members from the Derek Trucks Band will be performing there Dec. 29.  This really sounds like it's gonna be an amazing show.  This is a review I ran across.

I haven't seen Derek Trucks perform in a long time and I've never seen Susan perform live.

Two JB shows and now this, all in the month of December.  I'm happy.  wink

Susan is great to see live, we have seen her twice and she has an incredible voice.  With her husband playing that will make it even better!!!

Music is good for the Soul...

That is one show I wouldn't miss!

Susan,

All I can say is GO!!!!! Susan T. is just a wonderful person, singer and guitarist in her own right. Even though I haven't see Derek Trucks other than on video, it's apparent he has tremendous skills on slide guitar. That's one lethal combination for a show. Wow, can you imagine how talented their children will be? Oh that's right, Joe said to the children at the Wausau BITS presentation, the amount of natural ability (the gift) he has can be measured by only 10%. The rest of the 90% can be attributed to his hard work and perseverance. No one is simply "born with it", they need to pay their dues like Joe's done! Anyway, a definete show to see!

Have to disagree with you on that one,SRV's music flowed from his soul. He didn't have to think about what the next note would be,he just let his music flow from his soul.He was truely born with a gift.

Re: Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi - Soul Stew Revival

Yeah but Stevie didn't always play as well as he did. I have heard some of his earlier stuff and it was still good but nothing like what he he played later on. Doyle Bramhall II said in an interview that from the ages of 13-25 Stevie pretty much practised 12 hours a day, thats how he got that good. Sure he had natural talent and soul but he wouldn't have been able to express it the way he did without all the hard work he put into it.

Okaaaaaaaay.........

Back to the Susan, Derek, Soul Stew subject!!!

We're seeing them in ATL. We saw a variation of this show last New Year's Eve, before they were officially calling it Soul Stew.

It is awesome!!!! Best part is, both Scrapomatic and North Mississippi All Stars are opening!! I felt like I'd hit the jackpot when we got our tickets!!

This also means there will be lots of inter-play between all bands. Mike Madison is Derek's singer. Scrapomatic is a really really cool, someone edgy blues band. Just two guys.

North Mississippi All Stars are just incredible. They do an old-style blues with a definitely new bent to it. Hard to describe. Fell in love with their sound and band the first time I saw them.

I think all the shows will be a little different with different combos of openers, etc. It'll be worth the $$ to go!!!

Just helping to spread the word about going to see GOOD bands and GOOD live music as often as possible!!!

Re: Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi - Soul Stew Revival

My tickets have been ordered.  I've seen Derek play a few times, but I've been waiting to see these two play together for awhile.  Looking at Derek's tour page, it appears that so far, there are only a few shows in Florida and the one in Atlanta that include Susan T. and members of the Derek Trucks Band in this "Soul Stew Revival" project.  The rest of his tour prior to 12/27/07 are the standard DTB shows.

Kellie, sounds like the Atlanta show will be extra special. But, believe me, I'm not complaining.  Hearing these two together should be awesome.

Hey Susan.  I am sure the show will be groovin and rockin'.  I have only seen Derek Trucks but to see him with Susan I am sure will be a very memorable show.  You will have to post after the show and lets us know what you thought.  I just saw Derek Trucks with his band this past Saturday night up at Penn State University in PA at the State Theatre.  This was my second time seeing them and he and the band once again grooved, jammed and absolutely rocked.  The band is simply AWESOME.  Also, I got to meet Derek before the show.  That was a was totally unexpected surprise.  He is sooo nice and a little shy!   I will be looking forward to your show review.

To say that it is a God-given gift is to truly disservice how hard Stevie Ray Vaughan truly worked. And to take it further, to say that anyone that is good at anything was born with it is actually an insult to how hard they've worked. Mozart once said something to that effect, that to just label him a prodigy is to do a disservice to all the hard work he did. This is true with anybody. Stevie may have had music flowing from his soul, but he had to absolutely bust his butt to learn the things that enabled him to let that music flow. Same with Joe, same with Derek, same with any guitar player that any of us look up to.

And yes, Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi are two of the best musicians going right now. Derek is easily one of the 2 best guitarists in the world today. I think we know who the other one is. And anybody who says that there is another slide player better than Derek is just being silly. There is none.

Re: Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi - Soul Stew Revival

Susan:

My advice is GO!

They make an amazing combination. Have seen them seperatatly, which was great, but together they really shine!
Talent was handed out freely with these two, as well as the rest of the band.
They played this summer at the Britt Festival in Jacksonville, Oregon. We were front, stage right and enjoyed a remarkable evening.

Scrapomatic opened with some Cajon blues. As a duo, they set a vibe that was enchanting. The CD-Alligator Love Cry is a winner. It gets a lot of airplay in my CD changer.

Watching Susan and Derek play together is a real treat. They cue off of each other very well. When Susan rips thru a riff, Derek is all eyes on her, and certainly her biggest fan. When Derek slices off a tasty run, Susan is watching him like a hawk. They constantly try to outdo each other, pushing the other to new heights.
The gentleman blowin horns is off the charts, and the keyboardist is all over the place.
We were able to see them off stage with the kids in arms.
Such a cool family.
What a rich heritage.

Give us a report after the show.

Hey Bud, Happy Thanksgiving!

As for the Mule comin to Portland, I was in Chicago for two weeks, and had to miss it.
Yes, the BluesMistress was PO'd.
I also missed Joe at HOB in Chicago by 3 days.

I have the new DVD on pre-order.

RR: It'd be my pleasure....I'll try to get it out to ya ASAP.  I caught the DC show and they were flat-out smokin'.  Definitely one of the best shows around (besides Joe).  Also if you get a chance to check out Grace Potter & The Nocturnals, who opened for them, they're cooler than the other side of the pillow.

Re: Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi - Soul Stew Revival

I was watching the 2007 Farm Aid concert on PBS the other day and I got a little tease of Derek and Susan playing together.  Ron, I see what you mean about them cueing off each other.  I can't wait to see them live.  Looks like I'm in for a real treat.  It also looks like Scrapomatic will be opening for them in Orlando.

I'm really looking forward to this show.  Just twelve more days.   big_smile

Re: Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi - Soul Stew Revival

If you have a chance to see the two of them together GO!  I have seen them play together several  times.  Susan is from the Boston area and several times [right around Thanksgiving] Derek's band would play in the Boston area and Susan would put in a guest appearance for a couple of songs.  They are awesome by themselves, together they are unbelievable!  Enjoy.

"There's a lot of people that are in so much of a hurry to be, I guess, to be famous or that they don't want to take the time to learn to play and do all that. They'd rather just knock it down off a computer and maybe get on a game show and get famous..That's fine if that's what you want to do.
