I typically prefer when the music lets the bass be more prominate .This could be just up in the mix or more runs or solos.
An example would be Josh Smiths Over My Head album. Very strong bass that does not take away but add to the guitar sound. I know it all depends on the sound you are trying to create and all music does not need a heavy bass boost.
