Topic: The Magpie Salute - High Water 1

The first studio release of the latest version of The Black Crowes.  Rich Robinson and Marc Ford bury the hatchet with a new frontman and there's some excellent songs pumping out.  This might become my new favorite for 2018.  I picked up their tasty live album from last year.  A real nice jam of one of my faves of theirs, "Wiser Time".

Re: The Magpie Salute - High Water 1

I was never a fan of Chris Robinson, hence, my dislike of the Black Crows. I recently saw Rich Robinson on something (can't remember what) and thought I should give him a closer listen. Then my nephew, who is a huge BC fan, clued me in on The Magpie Salute. They are playing at this year's Bourbon and Beyond festival (which I'm attending) so I pulled them up on YouTube. One listen and I was hooked. I've had their version of Oh, Sweet Nuthin' on a continuous loop in my head for weeks now. Need to finish downloading the new CD and also picked up tracks from the live CD. Can't wait to see them live!  #teamrich  #marcf*ckinford

Love this album from first listen through; fits like a favourite jacket. Couple of tracks almost rock out like old 'Crowes but not enough that Rich & the gang (half of which are old Crowes) are trying to copy.

All we need now is a full band, proper tour.......

Re: The Magpie Salute - High Water 1

I've been listening a lot to The Magpies "Live" album played to a limited audience at a studio in Woodstock, NY.  The album is all covers of TBC, Delaney and Bonnie, Bob Marley, Faces (Ronnie Lane seems to be a favorite) and Pink Floyd.  There is one original song written by lead singer John Hogg and Rich Robinson that's very blues rock.
My favorite song is an old Black Crowes cover, "What Is Home" and second would be this song.....  Marc Ford doing an excellent cover of one of David Gilmour's finest songs.

I've been a fan of The Black Crowes for thirty years but had gotten weary of the formulaic retreads of Chris Robinson.  Imho CR reached his peak doing his best Robert Plant impersonation on Live At the Greek with Jimmy Page.  I've always been a big fan of Marc Ford and have come to the conclusion he's the missing link that I've missed playing with Rich Robinson.  Adding John Hogg as lead vocalist was a brilliant stroke for this new band.

No relation. Robben's brother Mark is a harp player, but rarely strays from home these days due to a mental disability. That's too bad Barbie doesn't dig Chris. I saw his one off project As The Crow Flies in Oakland back in May. Him, 3 of The Crowes and Marcus King on lead guitar. The hottest frickin' show I've seen in years!!!

Re: The Magpie Salute - High Water 1

Ugh, Bourbon & Beyond schedule was released today. The Magpie Salute is only slotted for 30 minutes! sad  But Gov't Mule is also playing that day and their slot is an hour. Hoping there's a family jam planned!

The second day of the fest was cancelled due to excessive rain, so, no Magpie Salute. Today I BOUGHT MEET & GREET TIX FOR CHICAGO IN JANUARY! big_smile big_smile big_smile

Re: The Magpie Salute - High Water 1

Saturday night I saw The Magpie Salute in Chicago. Started out with meet and greet. I was watching through a window and noticed the guys were all standing like statues and shaking hands. We decided that we wanted to be last so as not to be rushed by other waiting fans. We walked in at which point I declared there would be no handshaking, only hugs! And they happily obliged. So we hugged them all, took pics and then I hugged them all again. big_smile It was great - then on to the show. General admission so I was standing right in front of Rich being blown out by his amps which must have been turned up to about 15! OUCH! (Ears still ringing.) Sadly I could barely hear anything else. But I was clued in that it is somewhat of a right of passage for first timers who unknowingly take that position. Next time I'll know better to stand on the other side or in the back. I didn't care, though. It was a great show and I had a blast. Nothing but straight up rock and roll. 2 or 3 songs were done acoustic with just Rich, Marc and John. Lots of new songs were played along with deep cut covers of various bands. Crosby, Stills and Nash, War and something from Marc Ford's catalog are all I can remember right now. I will definitely try to see this band as many times as they are in my area. Hell, I might even hit the road for them. TWO THUMBS UP!

Great review Barbie.  I remember that Ronnie lane cover the three of them did outside.  Outstanding vid.  I too will check their schedule.  Thanks for the reminder.

In the meantime I'm listening to Rich's 3rd solo release The Ceaseless Sight...almost daily.  Love the easy breezy feel of this album.
