Topic: Country Tour at Humphreys

Well, that was way more than I expected. Joe came out in a black sequined jacket and Levis, by half time he said he was going to throw it away it was so hot. He has a true Country voice which I never expected. Of course he killed it with the usual tone and licks modified for the genre, playing strats, his telecaster and a black Les Paul, but the new musicians added tasty layers to the product.
I didn't know hardly any of the song titles, but Shoe Shine Man, a song by Tom Hall was incredible mid-set when the band had found its groove. They finished with a 3 song encore and the crowd was begging for more.
Overall, it was simply fine!
Those that have tickets are in for a treat. Those that passed because it’s Country will be kicking themselves.
We’re really looking forward to tomorrow’s show. The band’s just getting warmed up.

Re: Country Tour at Humphreys

Initially I was in the "it's country" camp and so not too bothered, but i have found myself becoming more and more interested in this tour.

I'll have to wait for the live album though as I'm in the UK and have other priorities than paying Joe's ticket prices (not a complaint about them, just a fact).

Guitars: Fender American Original 60s Strat, Fender American Vintage 52 Tele, Gibson Les Paul Traditional
FX: Various including - Ceriatone Centura, Fire Custom Shop Carpe Diem

Re: Country Tour at Humphreys

I feel bad for Joe seeing some of the comments on his Instagram page. People talking about how rows of people were leaving during the show because they weren't expecting and don't like country music. Quite a few upset individuals out there. I feel like a lot of us knew it would be country all along, but there are many that don't pay attention and it probably was quite the shock for them. Given Joe's propensity to make anything sound good though, I can't imagine leaving a Joe show. A clip someone posted on facebook sure sounded good to me. I'm definitely not a lover of country but I am really looking forward to hearing Joe's take on it.

Re: Country Tour at Humphreys

I wouldn’t worry too much.  Recall one Bob Dylan and an electric guitar...even though his album out at the time contained electric “folk” tracks, some just do not truly pay attention and their inherent biases surface...

A Tom T. Hall song sounds good to me!

That plus numerous complaints about the venue seating - rows of cheap plastic chairs zip tied together and crammed  so close no one could move an inch.

The seating has NOTHING to do with Joe!  It is standard Humphrey’s Summer season outdoor concerts seating, period.

Re: Country Tour at Humphreys

Thank you Rick for posting the set list! I've watched the livefeed of part of the concert and particularly liked some songs there, now i KNOW THE NAMES! -  "Cry Love" , "The Long Black Vail" - superb; "Mean Eyed Cat"  - very catchy and happy.

Some songs were very contryish country and took me a minute to adjust musically, but Joe was great in each of them. Really liked Troy Cassar-Daley and  the  lap steel player.

Hope Joe is not upset because some mean comments on his instagram, he just deleted two pictures ( one of him with Reese Wynans was really good, glad I saved it).  But even negative comments were not about him and his band, but country music as a genre.

I remember the same thing happened with the first Red Rocks.. and Muddy Wolf tour.
the ads, posters and here all stated a 'tribute to Muddy and Howl'n' but people still thought it was a 'regular Joe' somehow.
People came here and posted for their first time stating such..

I'm sure the same thing with the country shows.
I'm sure the joint still looked full even if you loose 20-30 people.

(If only I had 1% of Joe's guitar talent)

Re: Country Tour at Humphreys

Last night he dropped the last half of country songs, shucked the sequined jacket, red this time, and finised up with the usual blazing extended medley with Sloe Gin finish and no encore.

Re: Country Tour at Humphreys

I wasn't thinking it would be a full country set until I heard sound check from our balcony next door at the Bay Club. Not a country fan by any means, but knowing how JB is always changing it up, didn't really surprise me a bit. The songs played still had his signature riffs shine through. Also the reports of people leaving Thursday night, from what I saw, is greatly exaggerated. We sat in the front row of sect. E dead center, and I walked up both aisles several times to the stage to take pics. There were very few empty seats that I could see going back to my seat. That said, there was a group behind us complaining during most of the show, until the encore...

Re: Country Tour at Humphreys

To the Bonamassa Braintrust,

I'm not sure what you guys were thinking, but the country show I saw at Humphrey's By The Bay on Thursday July 26 was God Awful! I drove nearly 3 hours from L.A. to San Diego and was looking forward to the concert. I spent $173 for a 10th row seat and had high expectations. Having seen Joe three times before, I was looking forward to the "guitar event of the year" like the ticket so proudly exclaimed.

I wish I'd missed it and had back the $173.60 I wasted on a night of pedestrian, uninspired, perfunctory country music. It was a dull display that seemed to have more to do with marketing the next DVD and increasing market share, than making an artistic statement.

In the future, you may want to consider two sets if you're going to throw the audience such a stylistic curve ball. That way, fans can experience something new followed by something more familiar. I love Muddy Waters, but don't expect him to do Cole Porter. And a night of Shakespeare with Robin Williams could be interesting, but not when I'm paying to see comedy. And the comparison to Dylan going electric doesn't hold up.

So seriously. I'd like my money back. The concert sucked. I saw Jeff Beck at Irvine on 7/20 and Ry Cooder in Napa on 7/22. Now those were amazing shows well worth the money and time.

I was so looking forward to another display of guitar prowess with Joe Bonamassa. What I got was a concert by a musician with clearly no artistic vision or consideration of what his fans come to see. It was a lame attempt at country music, and a waste of my time, effort, gas and money!!

The emperor was naked on this night!

Re: Country Tour at Humphreys

Just wondering if a recording of this show was made and is circulating? Anyone?
Been hoping one would turn up...
