Topic: PAF Clones. What are you digging?
I have been afforded the unique opportunity of going into the Gibson Custom Shop and spec-ing out my very own R9. This is going to be the first les paul that I've ever owned and I truly couldnt be more excited for the experience.
I was told that I will have the opportunity to provide whatever pickups I want to go into it and as of right now I am looking at either ox4's or Wizz. I've heard and read rave reviews on both, but not having good headphones or speakers at the moment, youtube demos really aren't helping me make my decision.
Right now, I am potentially leaning towards the Hot Duane's by OX4.
I have read almost everything I could find on both and you know how the internet can be, there is lots of conflicting information.
I generally like my tone to be a bit darker, warm, thick, and singing. Don't like too much top end, too much brightness, or any harshness.
Right now I am playing through a highly modified deluxe reverb (kt66's, 2x10, 1x15 extension) but after I make the Les Paul purchase, I plan on saving for a friedman dirty shirley, small box 50 watt, or both.
I have a tendency to tinker with guitars, but this is one that I'd really like to get right the first time, so please forgive me, as I know this topic has been beaten to death.
I've never really sat down and compared the different alnico magnets so I am open to any and all suggestions. I think some of my favorite LP tone comes from the hands of Gary Moore, Bonamassa, and players of the like.
Thank you for any input.
