Topic: Martin Barre & Band

Don't know if there's already a thread, so apologies if this is a repeat. And same goes for the title; not sure if it's Martin Barre Band as it did start out as Martin Barre's New Day.

Anywhoo, finally managed to get to see Martin Barre’s band, the one he’s been touring since Jethro Tull… well whatever happened to Jethro Tull…?

So what do you get? Jethro Tull’s greatest hits? No, what you get is more a “fan’s selection” of past Tull classics, tweaked and rocked-up a bit as the main core of the set, but Martin isn’t sitting back and coasting on past glories; his playing is as crisp and fiery as ever it was when he got the Grammy back in 1988 for Crest of A Knave; though a good many of the back catalogue were more 1968 & 1969 but without sounding as dated as you may expect. It’s certainly been a long while since I’ve heard the likes of Sweet Dream or To Cry You A Song let alone the relatively more recent Skating Away. However, it wasn’t all past glories though The Beatles’ Eleanor Rigby got some treatment and the band’s take on the Blues classic Crossroads was Mississippi delta meets British folk and a washboard thrown in. Martin Barre is a fine writer in his own right, and several self-penned numbers from his latest studio album Back to Steel were included to great reception.

He’s also put together a really solid band; Dan Crisp handling 2nd guitar and vocal duties; he may not stand on one leg and twirl a flute, but he can certainly handle the mad-eyed nuances of Anderson’s songs. Solid bass from Alan Thomson, who also delivered superb slide when required. Drums on this (part) tour were handled by the only other former-Tull-ist Paul Burgess (between Broadsword & Under Wraps era) and two backing singers, mainly on the non-Tull songs, Alex Hart & Elani Andrea. The girls were allowed to do a few songs on their own, before the main band came out, and their harmonies were spellbinding.

To sum up the show - there were Minstrels in The Cluny this night…...

Re: Martin Barre & Band

Banshee, thanks for this heads up! Jethro Tull was one of my favorite British bands in the '70s and as with just about all my faves my focus was on the lead guitar work. Sept. 1st is a ways out, but seeing him in the intimate surroundings of Yoshi's would be a joy! Small club geared toward Jazz, but built for sound. Not a bad seat in the house and a kicka$$ Japanese restaurant to boot! Just saw Albert Cummings there last Monday, great time as always!

                                                                                     Martin Barre Rocks!!!

You're welcome, J Dawg.  Just sorry it took me a couple of years to catch Martin & the band (despite The Mentulls nagging me to go to a show). 70 years young and he still delivers a great 2hr show.

I'd recommend also that you take a few extra dollars with you; Martin has a few albums available; Order Of Play is his band re-recording several of the Tull back-catalogue that the show set is made from and Away With Words is an acoustic, instrumental (except Hymn 43) album of some rare little Tull numbers

Re: Martin Barre & Band

Great review Mike.

A few months ago, The Mentulls shared the same dressing room with Martin and his band at A New Day Festival and after Martin had taken a look at the band and in particular guitarist Andrew Pipe, he decided to invite Andrew on stage at Ripley Town Hall (21 Jan show) for a couple of numbers including the encore Locomotive Breath.

Such an honour for Andrew as he cites Martin has his guitar hero and inspiration for taking up guitar at the age of 10.

Video to follow.

Re: Martin Barre & Band

thanks much, I have my sights set on 3/22 in Chattanooga, easy drive from here. Growing up I always thought he was a great guitarist and was fortunate to see them 4 times in the 70s. When Aqualung came out all my teenage friends that also played guitar started referring to him as Martin 'Barre' chord, which infuriated me. The new band sounds exceptional, can't wait.

Re: Martin Barre & Band

many thanks for the vids....... I wonder how many remember that they made an appearance on Dick Clark's American Bandstand in June or July of 1970 ? They played Teacher and Witches Promise, the youngish crowd was somewhat stunned by it all. It is loaded on Utube but the sound quality is terrible.

I saw them at an intimate club in southern Indiana around that time.  Maybe 200 people and they were an unknown band.  Ian Anderson asked me where the washroom was and I was like wth!  Saw Deep Purple and Iron Butterfly at the same place in '70.  The 13th Hour in Evansville, In.  Believe it or not Trey...

Re: Martin Barre & Band

then you saw them with the fantastic Glenn Cornick on bass, that is too cool........by the time I first saw them on the Aqualung tour it was Jeffrey Hammond Hammond on bass and Glenn had gone on to form Wild Turkey

Don't know if it's of interest, but Mr. Anderson has been re-working some of the Tull back catalogue, in a church, with a string quartet....?  Imaginatively titled; Jethro Tull: The String Quartets its available toward the end of March, or you can pre-order via www.pledgemusic.com

Re: Martin Barre & Band

I saw something on the Tull website that they will do a one off concert in London, not sure on that date

If this is the same group then it's the Mandoki Soulmates, March 3rd at Hammersmith Eventim Apollo and will feature among others Al Di Meola, Randy Brecker, and Bill Evans. I just love Bill Evans on sax !!! If I was there this would be a can't miss event

From the website; re-String Quartets:-
The String Quartets is a new album by Jethro Tull’s Ian Anderson and the Carducci Quartet featuring the classic songs of Jethro Tull, arranged and orchestrated by John O’Hara. Ian plays flute on most of the tracks and even sings a few lines here and there to provide his trademark sounds in the context of classical music traditions. Living In The Past, Aqualung, Locomotive Breath and Bungle In The Jungle are amongst the album track listing but appear, along with their fellow musical travelers, under more cryptic titles to differentiate them from the original recordings and arrangements.

Recorded in the crypt of Worcester Cathedral, UK and in St Kenelm’s Church, Sapperton, Gloucestershire, UK, Ian says that this album is “Perfect for lazy, long sunny afternoons, crisp winter nights, weddings and funerals.” He forgot to add, perfect also after a night of wild, abandoned sex or to celebrate the win of your favourite football team. Essentially, anytime music for sophisticated lovers of Classic Rock too afraid to wear their Tull T-shirt at the village barbecue.

The Mandolki Soulmates (Leslie Mandoki alongside guests Al Di Meola, Chris Thompson, Nick Van Eede, Tony Carey, Randy Brecker, John Helliwell, Bill Evans, Udo Lindenberg, Bobby Kimball, Till Brönner and Szakcsi Lakatos Béla.) seems to be something different. and 3 concerts at Paris, London & Berlin.

Otherwise Ian and his band will be hitting the US in May 2017.

Interesting as I still have a ticket stub from my first Tull show in 1970 at The Berkeley Community Theater. Not sure what month it was, the stub is packed away somewhere and the bands name was on the part they tore off. Incredible gig!
