Topic: Three Kings , Albert King.. what was Joe playing ?

I've searched the forum to find this discussion, it may be here somewhere, but I'm not a young man and my time is getting short ...........

What guitars was Joe using in the Albert King part of Three Kings ?

One was a Flying V ... was it Alberts ?   And the other, IDK what it was.

Thanks in advance for any replys.

Re: Three Kings , Albert King.. what was Joe playing ?

Mr. Albert King's 1972 Dan Erlewine Custom V - "Lucy"
you'll notice Joe playing it "upside down" - Lucy's a lefty ... Mr. Albert's name in the Fretboard upside down / pick guard up "top".
(borrowed from the collection of actor Steven Seagal I believe.)
I'll Play The Blues For You
Born Under A Bad Sign

1958 Gibson Double Guarded Flying V (not "Amos" ... thanks DougH for the insight.)
I Get Evil
Breaking Up Somebody's Home
Angel Of Mercy
Cadillac Assembly Line

1958 Gibson Explorer
Oh Pretty Woman

I guess insomnia has some positives smile  (Hope I'm correct.)

Re: Three Kings , Albert King.. what was Joe playing ?

I thought Amos had a black pick guard and on Angel of Mercy the V he's playing has a white pickguard.

did he change the pickguard on Amos???

Good pickguard ... or rather ... pickup smile ... I looked at the Gear Used Liner Notes before posting to double check dates and it lists the V as Amos ... but then again ... Explorer wasn't listed at all ...

Maybe someone in the know will chime in ....

Re: Three Kings , Albert King.. what was Joe playing ?

DougH has me looking!! big_smile

Getting warmer .. but not quite there ... Back Stage at Red Rocks ... at the 9:55 minute mark ... a 1958 V Joe borrowed for 3 Kings ... but this one has a Half Pickguard in White. (The Borrowed "Ronny" V).  The Greek "Albert Set List" V has a Full White for many songs.

Joe then picks up Mr. Albert's 1972 V to show ... but there's one more V in the rack he never pulls out to show!!

Few minutes later ...

I think DougH is correct ... comparing Natasha's nice close up of the Full White Guard V from San Diego CA 3 Kings (seemed to be used later on in the Tour and Greek) ... the finish wear on the bottom V, the dark circle mark on the upper V, pick guard discoloration and upper point missing (could be original to guitar?) ...

... to photos of Amos from Newsletter ... the wood / wear finish, color, grain, no circle mark ...

(Guessing Greek Gear Used Liner Notes may not be all inclusive.)

Maybe Joe will see this Thread and pop in with some insight.

A few more minutes later ... puts it to bed I think ... Greek "Albert Set" includes a Full Guarded 1958 V borrowed at the time by Joe (along with a '58 half guarded that appeared earlier in the 3 Kings Tour.)

A post from Joe at LPF when he purchased Amos ... first few sentences are here ... Joe mentions the Full White Guard V ... borrowed as well ...

Thanks guys.... I had that picture of Amos Arthur saved as my screensaver for a long time. Never thought one day that V would end up at Casa-massa. The whole thing started in late July at the rehearsals for the Three Kings tour. The ATC was nice enough to loan me his 58 V for the Albert songs. I ended up playing that and ultimately his other double guarded V for the whole 8 song set. Unheard of for me. It really nailed the Albert sound and opened my eyes to a new sonic flavor that I had not discovered yet. The V's have a certain voice that the burst dont have. They are brighter without being harsh. So I decided to inquire to my friend Norm who I have known for 25 years about the V I knew he had. I said my intention was to play it and fire it up through the high power twins and give it some road use. He was super cool and agreed to sell it to me. I picked it up a week ago and I am still enthralled by its sound. The Korina V's are Hi-fi without being harsh. It loves my tweed super amp and reverb tank.. I will post a video later today incase your interested in hearing it. This guitar is not for the Bona-seum it will be played live, so if you see the black guard white jack plate V you'll know its "Amos" which is its new name.

Thanks DougH for pointing out that notable difference right at the get go!

Re: Three Kings , Albert King.. what was Joe playing ?

I believe I saw both the double guard v and the explorer at Rumble Seat guitars in Carmel California a
couple of years ago. I seem to remember they were owned by Rick Vito. I also seem to remember this
pair being a cover story for Vintage Guitar a few years back. Ring any bells with anyone else?
Cheers
