Topic: Albert King

Hi from a newbie.
I started my journey into blues or blues rock via Eric Clapton, who I  still a big fan of, going backwards through the three Kings, Muddy all way to acoustic prewar blues. Anyway, since the Greek show will be out soon, I thought I would start a topic on Albert, nicknamed
"The Velvet Buldozer", who is my favourite off the trio.  Anzone likes him as well?

For the newbies who caught him only through Joe, I can make a guide of what his best records are.

Some of those who covered the tunes he made famous are

Born under a bad sign - Cream
Oh pretty woman - John Mayall, Gary Moore, Allman Brothers (live)
The Hunter - Free (with Paul Kossoff)
Crosscut saw - Albert himself covered this, originally an acoustic delta blues song  from Tommy McClennan -  Eric
              Clapton, Otis Rush

Albert's own covers of Stormy Monday and The Sky is crying were in turn covered by SRV, the Texas Flood solo is mostly made off  Albert's licks  from his live Blues Power instrumental, and another heavily influenced song is Ain't gonna give up on love - compare the melody in the verses and Stevie' s way of Singing with Albert's Blues at sunrise, for example.

An interesting tidbit - Albert started his professonal music career as a drummer.

Re: Albert King

I recall Freddy Jones Band doing Cross Cut Saw back in my college days too......

Re: Albert King

I think this is one of the best King covers ever, Manuel Gales is Eric's brother, he considered himself to be Albert's son although that wasn't true. Little Jimmy left us way too soon, I do believe that he would have been just as talented a guitarist as Eric is now, maybe better and I think that Eric would agree with that.
