Topic: The Hoax

Not sure if anyone is familiar with this band, I used to head out and watch them most weekends when I was living in the UK. They released a handful of albums and went out on the road supporting Buddy Guy before disbanding in 1999. From memory they won the 'Best British Blues Band' award for four or five years running.

Stunning playing by both guitarists; Jesse Davey (the one with the long hair) nailing the SRV feel & tone and IMHO probably one of the best blues guitarists in the world today (alongside Joe). There's heaps on YouTube, Spotify etc but here's a bit of what they do... enjoy!

Re: The Hoax

Nice one. They are well known on this forum. Here is a previous topic. I was told that they should be touring next year.

Cheers for that, cool to see they are touring again as I know that's always a little on/off with them. Guess they all have their solo stuff going on now as well.

If people liked their Big City Blues album they should really check out their earlier albums; BCB had some great tracks on it but there were also few 'filler' tracks as well IMO, I definitely wouldn't put it as the best one they've done. However, playing live is what they do best so if anyone gets the chance to see them you should go for it as they seriously rock. Take your earplugs too.

Re: The Hoax

Jesse Davey put out a killer of an album last September, Big Blues, featuring Ian Siegal doing vocals on a couple of numbers, also features Hugh Coltman. Jesse was also in the producer's chair for the debut album by a young band from Warrington, Black Circles, who are worth investigating. Interestingly, Mark Barrett covered Black Circles drum stool when they did a recent tour with another forum favourite, Laurence Jones.

Jon Amor recently has been doing acoustic/electric duo tours with Joel Fisk (LaVendore Rogue; Hokie Joint; Tim Aves' Wolfpack), that have been going down a storm; recommend you check them out. Also he's been a core member of a conglomeration called The Boom Band with Marcus Bonfanti & Paddy Milner, as well as a couple of great albums as Jon Amor Blues Group that'll rock your world.

Yeah, I quite liked The Boom Band record, less in-your-face blues than The Hoax but cool nonetheless. Jon's solo stuff is on my MP3 player too, although to me it tends to sound a little more mainstream and his playing is a lot more reserved. Maybe that's just evolved with maturity, I'm not sure.

Have you heard The Davey Bros album 'Monkey #9'? Killer playing all over it and deserves to be mentioned.

Re: The Hoax

Yeah, have Monkey #9 as well as Wolfbox CD by Davey Brothers (same thing basically, just fewer discs...)

Last time they toured saw Robin & the missus side project Well Hung Heart;  I'll be diplomatic and say they were "experimental" and you can make of that what you will.

I take it you have Recession Blues; Tribute to B.B.King, The Hoax' most recent album....

By the way, this is one of the best non-Hoax takes on Don't Shake My Hand that you're likely to hear (unless anyone knows different...) by Virgil & The Accelerators; okay maybe not vocally, but what this boy can do on guitar....

(VATA folded at Christmas, but anxiously awaiting what Virgil (guitar/vox) & Gabriel (drums) come back with.)

Lol about Well Hung Heart, experimental indeed! Not really my cup of tea TBH.

Loved 'Recession Blues', sounds so good with the additional horns. It's actually one of my favourite albums along with 'Live Forever'.

Re: The Hoax

I was a very late comer to this band - had heard of them but never really listened to them.  I saw Jon Amor at Hebden Bridge Blues Festival in 2014, then in 2015 I found out I was going to see the whole band at Blues on the Farm.  All I can say is wow - very few bands impressed me like they did.  I would love to see them again.  Someone who is on this Forum a lot has them on her Bucket List - maybe this will be her chance?

Here are some pictures I snagged last year at Blues on the Farm:  https://www.facebook.com/sandra.piche.5 … amp;type=3
