Topic: NGD: Gibson Les Paul Traditional T Iced Tea

Hi folks.

So I thought I'd share some snaps of my new LP - a 2016 Gibson Les Paul Traditional T in Iced Tea - that my GF has christened "Rusty" thanks to it's deep reddish brown colour.

Still deciding whether to keep the stock pickups or swap them out for a set of BKP Mules, but the speed knobs will be changed for vintage style gold top hats with pointers and the truss rod cover will be swapped for a plain one...soon as they arrive from Amazon!!

Also just finished restringing it with a top-wrap, Joe style!!

Congratulations, nice looking LP. Considering the name it has been given you should sent it to me, I'll find room for it. wink

I know right!! Photos don't even do it justice! Looks as good a top as many R9s I've seen...easily the best that was on the wall at Guitarguitar Epsom!!

Looking forward to getting out to a few jams nights to give her a proper workout in the next few weeks :-)

Was so glad it sounded as good as it looks!

Congrats on the newbie.........enjoy it.

Re: NGD: Gibson Les Paul Traditional T Iced Tea

Well...today I upgraded the stoptail and bridge to Faber ones and wow...I thought it sounded good before, but it just seems more alive now and so much more resonant...sustain for days!!

Next week's project is to upgrade it to 50s wiring to retain some treble when I roll off the volumes and I'm still considering upgrading to BKP Mules...

That top is awesome, congratulations.

Re: NGD: Gibson Les Paul Traditional T Iced Tea

I have 50s braided wiring and Mules - a great upgrade. Ali tailpiece and abr also helped out o my 91 standard.

Good luck.

Re: NGD: Gibson Les Paul Traditional T Iced Tea

All mods done now. Looks, plays and sounds even better than before!!

Don't know if it does sound as good as an R9 or a real 59, but I'm not sure I'd be able to really tell that much difference even if it did!!

Next thing I want is a decent amp, but that's later in the year once I'm able to actually make the most of it. Thinking maybe a Ceriatone Tweed Twin clone with an fx loop added so I can have some reverb....but must wait...

Re: NGD: Gibson Les Paul Traditional T Iced Tea

Beautiful, congrats! That one is a keeper for sure.

Do you notice much difference with the over-wrapping? I haven't tried it yet but thinking I might on my next string change; have heard that it makes the strings feel looser due the the angle at the bridge altering the tension?

I'd agree with that....can't say it makes much difference to the sound, but yeah...seems to make things feel just that little bit looser. Also gives my hand somewhere a bit more comfortable to rest when I'm playing near the bridge!!

Re: NGD: Gibson Les Paul Traditional T Iced Tea

So would you possibly need to compensate by going up a string gauge or is it just a subtle difference?

The intent of top wrapping is the looser feel, going up a gauge would not make sense.

I was looking at doing it from a tonal perspective. I've talked to a few guys that have done it and they say that there's a benefit to sustain which is what caught my ear. So I'll do it if there's a payoff in terms of tone, sustain etc but I don't want my strings to feel like they are looser than what they are normally.

Re: NGD: Gibson Les Paul Traditional T Iced Tea

Going up a string gauge would probably give the change in tone and sustain....so maybe that's worth keeping in mind.

I remember Joe explaining about the subtle improvements to tone and sustain in an interview somewhere a while back, I think the guy asked him what the deal was with him stringing some of his LP's in that manner.
