Topic: Led Zeppelin Trial Updates

The trial has begun and Jimmy Page took the stand yesterday.  Check out the last quote in the first link it's a great response from Jimmy and the audience in the courtroom enjoyed it too.

Re: Led Zeppelin Trial Updates

What's it been....45yrs since Stairway was released? Why a lawsuit now? Only Donald Trump is more lame than this!

Re: Led Zeppelin Trial Updates

well there is no doubt in my mind that Spirt wrote Taurus and Led Zep was touring with Spirt a couple of years before Zep did Stairway.

they're too close for me.. I would give the nod to Spirt and Taurus.

P.S.  we know this is just another attempt at a money grab by the estate. and only brought up again 40's after the first law suite because judges and lawyers understand music rights better.

this is far different than the money grab from Freddy Kings estate.. Joe was up front that it was a tribute to Freddy..
Zep just stole Stairway.

Re: Led Zeppelin Trial Updates

It will be interesting to see how it "plays"out now.
Geeze 40 years seems a bit long to fight over it now.
Hard to say what to think as you know it's a money grab and the Zeps not exactly clean reputation for hocking other music for their songs.

Re: Led Zeppelin Trial Updates

This LA Times article reveals that due to the statue of limitations set by copyright laws the Estate can only seek damages for the 3 year period between May 2011 and May 2014.  The plaintiff's economic expert put the dollar figure of revenue generated by the song at $60 million bucks however, it does not include associated expenses.

So Stairway generated $60 million in revenue for three years 40 years after it was written?  Damn I wish I could write a decent tune!

have I understood this wrong? I thought that the dispute was only about the introduction to StH and not the entire song?

The day lawyers are the decision makers on a subjective art form such a music is a very sad day, surprised that any music fan would want this type of rubbish.

Re: Led Zeppelin Trial Updates

Although I have no love lost for lawyers, I also don't understand how a music fan could approve of misuse of someone else's artistic talents for their own gain....

Re: Led Zeppelin Trial Updates

for fear of sounding like a lawyer it all depends on your definition of misuse, -  if Led Zep lose this case then what happens to blues? - genre full off plagiarism? It will set a bad precedent that will only result in lawyers wages increasing. Music develops by taking something that has gone before and then adapting it, due to the construction of music and the limitations on scales there is very little that is brand new. Dani California and Mary Jane’s Last Dance?

Re: Led Zeppelin Trial Updates

This article has a bit more information on John Paul Jones's testimony and that of a NYU music professor who is the defenses expert witness.  The NYU professor stated the descending arpeggiated chromatic line has been around for nearly 300 years.  He cited as an example the song "Catch A Shade" from a 1963 record by the band Modern Folk Quartet.  There is a youtube to that song and you begin to understand that the technique has often been used.  The trial resumes Tuesday.

Re: Led Zeppelin Trial Updates

This update is prior to any testimony on Tuesday.  The article does identify a 350 year old composition by an Italian composer that incorporates the descending arpeggiated chromatic line and you can listen for yourself at the 0:32 second mark.  It does sound quite similar.  Also the defense's lawyer is arguing "standing" of the plaintiff.
