Re: Free Bird

Allman Brothers Band are better..... Ricky Medlocke should have stayed playing as Blackfoot ..... although "One More From The Road” is one of the best live albums ever made...

wink - just stirring the pot!

Apples and Oranges as far as the 2 bands go in my book.LS more of a straight up rock style versus ABB more blues and jam band.Although the both belong in the southern rock genre

Re: Free Bird

Joe could likely revamp some Skynyrd with a cool version of Take Your Time or maybe Four Walls of Raiford.
Or maybe a little older school and burn it up on Double Trouble.

Ian if you didn't know, Rickey was a member of the band briefly before they released their first album. He played drums back then for them. Agree with you on One More From The Road, my favorite version of Crossroads.

What is success? Is it do yo' own thang, or is it to join the rest?   -Allen Toussaint

There have been stranger covers. At a Frank Zappa concert someone shouted out to play Whipping Post so the band learned it and it became a regular song in subsequent shows.

And what an absolutely brilliant cover it is. This version is stunning. Magnificent vocals and Zappa's shred is a joy to behold.

I did, but I think RM is (or was) a great frontman, not a bit-part player as in LS. The fact that he franchised the Blackfoot name out just shows that he is more about the money than the music, IMHO. Blackfoot live were something special, - at Hammersmith Odeon from which they recored part of their “Highway Song” live album goes down in my top 10 gigs ever, might even be top 5..... smile

WHOA.....Can't say I'm a fan of that...... AT ALL. Different strokes for different folks I guess.

Re: Free Bird

For those Freebird fans, listen to this Grant Green song from before Freebird was recorded.

Its a great piece of Jazz, but if you listen from 5:00mins onwards it is so close to Freebird, its difficult to believe LS hadn't heard this.

This version has keyboards and not a triple guitar attack but the chord changes, the  rhythm and the way the keyboards build and include the trills at the end is just so similar ...
