Topic: Chesapeake Bay Blues Festival - Annapolis MD - 05/22/2016

Awesome show this evening in the early rain, wet & mud at Sandy Point State Park in Annapolis, MD.  My wife & I thoroughly enjoyed it, despite the adverse conditions.  Ultimately, I think this will make for a pretty memorable experience.  Very cool to watch & hear Joe and the boys before and after twilight right on the shore of the Chesapeake Bay, with lights from boats and vehicles crossing the 5 mile Bay Bridge shining across the water, complementing the bright lights from the stage and the 2 Jumbotron screens, which were awesome BTW.

Natasha's warning about the multi-inch mud everywhere was helpful in terms of attire preparation, and was corroborated by other on-line posts.  We went well prepared, but boy what a quaqmire it was.  We were afraid to venture near the food stands for fear of being sucked into the mud forever smile.  What a mess.

We got there right after Tab Benoit finished up, but before Canned Heat took the stage.  They were pretty good, but paled in comparison to the closing act & festival anchor.  There was not much precipitation while Canned Heat played, just some misting now and again.  But when they finished and the stage shuffle began to move their equipment out & Joe's in, a light rain started.  It continued through Joe's first 2-3 songs, then faded back to mostly misting or light sprinkling for the remainder of his set.  So, still pretty wet but not bad at all if you came with ponchos, umbrellas, boots and such.

As for the show, it was relatively short & sweet.  A bit over an hour & a half or so total, but absolutely fantastic.  Joe was all business, didn't say much at all, and drove hard from the start until the close with John Henry with no pause at all.  We were near the center, a bit to the back & left of the 100.7 The Bay tent & platform.  The sound & mix was excellent from there BTW.  Last we saw Joe live was three years ago at the Hippodrome in Baltimore, and the sound at this outdoor venue was FAR better than that IMHO, for whatever reason.  Really good.

The set list was short & sweet.  Mountain Climbing was a highlight early, and then Joe's solo during No Good Place For The Lonely totally blew me away.  Fantastic stuff.  The whole show was incredible.  Joe & his awesome band were really on tonight, and all business.

This Train
Mountain Climbing
Blues Of Desperation
No Good Place For The Lonely
Hidden Charms
Never Make Your Move Too Soon
Angel of Mercy
Hey Baby (New Rising Sun)
Oh Beautiful
I Gave Up Everything For You 'Cept The Blues
Going Down
Sloe Gin
Ballad Of John Henry

As a final comment, I never really noticed how many of the lyrics in Joe's songs mention "standing in the rain."  Seems to be a blues staple.  Every time a lyric mention of rain came up (seems like 5 or 6 times, at least), a shout went up around me from the crowd.  I guess you've not really experienced the blues properly until you've listened to it while standing in the rain smile.  Well, I've done that now I suppose.

In short, a memorable experience and an awesome concert by Joe & the boys.

They did "Never Make Your Move Too Soon" not "Just Got Paid"

High energy show more than made up for the rain and mud smile Joe and the guys were wailing! Always more exciting when it's a standing show. Was a blast seeing Joe come out in muck boots with his suit. He was enjoying himself smile Feel bad for the crew, man what an ordeal for them. Trucks getting stuck and tow trucks called. Having to walk in the equipment. Rain or sun, the show must go on. Really give them credit for the professionals they are. Will post more when I get some of the videos done.

Re: Chesapeake Bay Blues Festival - Annapolis MD - 05/22/2016

It was great seeing you Jane! Even if it was from afar. I got a nice photo of you and a few of the muddy conditions. Pretty wild to look at what we were dealing with. There was basically a mud moat between this small wooden walkway right near the stage and where our chairs were. It was a mess, but it did help keep the amount of people squeezing in down. So nice to be there with so many of our friends. Even a couple of people we had met from the cruise were there and had traveled a bit for this festival. So thankful and appreciative of the people that I have met through filming all this music because they often help me out with getting a great place near the front. Some have kind of acted like bodyguards, lol. Keeping people from pushing into me and I am so grateful for this. When you are a small person, you need all the help you can get smile Just want to thank anyone who has saved me spots. I hung out with a friend who had her first real Joe moment at this show. It was so fun to see her all excited. She has only seen him a couple of times and never met him. Well, Joe walked by right in front of her earlier in the day and the look on her face when she recognized who it was was just priceless. I went over to where she was and we watched Joe go check out the stage situation. He looked over at us at one point and I waved and he called over "Hi guys" Well, my friend almost fainted right there, lol. Then he came walking past us on the other side of the fence and as he walked by, I mentioned something to him about the lovely conditions we were having and he said he saw I had warned him about them. Then he saw my friend's boots and said to her "Nice Wellingtons. Where'd you get them" and she responded "At a store. Do you want them"  Yes, fans are willing to give Joe the shoes off their feet, lol. It was so funny. She was just beside herself with excitement. She said the boots will now be enshrined big_smile It was just so fun to see a newer fan be so excited and have such a cool little moment.  Not an easy thing with how things are nowadays since Joe is not as accessible as he used to be. So happy for her smile
The filming conditions were pretty horrendous at this show given the rain, and people pushing into you while you are standing. Had to dry off the lens and camera a few times. But I really wanted to capture this performance because how often will we ever see Joe play at a festival like this and so many people we knew were there. Plus how often do you film a show where Joe is wearing a suit and a pair of muck boots smile Joe and the guys seemed real excited probably with it being a standing crowd and totally different conditions then they are used to. I think it was a nice change for them. Joe was kickin' a$$ through the entire set. Didn't slow down for a minute, except for maybe Sloe Gin. He really seemed to be having a blast and so were we smile

Re: Chesapeake Bay Blues Festival - Annapolis MD - 05/22/2016

First of all thanks to Natasha for the films. There is no limit to the gratitude. Even though I was there, the vids evoke great memories. I agree with Jane and Tash, Joe shows with Bonabuds are the best!

OK, it was a pig sty sloppy mess. So you put on your rain gear and boots, cover with a tarp, and enjoy. There were many things that could have been worse. It seems to be a theme. Hot August Blues, Vienna, Carnegie Hall, and now Chesapeake. Joe brings the crazy weather smile  I am glad we had VIP seats. I get freaked out when folks start pushing and shoving. I didn't try to get up to the fence. I wasn't very far back and I had a great view of the show. I got a kick out of Joe's Wellies. There's always a big deal about Joe's shoes, and I think this was a first! smile
The show itself was, as usual, top notch. The solo in No Good Place... was worth the price and the hassle. What fun to have newbies around. I told them to hold on when the solo started. Stunned faces surrounded me smile I think this may have been the last festival Joe plays. lol I felt badly for the promoter, Don Hooker. The hay delivery for Sunday got delayed and, as Tash noted, there were many issues loading Joe's equipment. But, the show always goes on.
Lois is the girl Tash is talking about. Such a dear! She got there before sunrise and staked out our space. It was hard to bring her back to earth after her Joe encounter. Thrilled for her getting thrilled! lol Her husband took some stellar shots  https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipM … hIb0xlYS13
So another memorable Joe experience. Now on to the next smile

PS My Maryland State Flag guitar strap didn't make the show. Too bad. It would have looked great on the big screen.  Maybe it will show up in November?
