The show I've been waiting for since Muddy Wolf is tonight! Joe, sorry the weather looks a bit troublesome, but the weather ap is showing it clearing before the show. We Coloradoans will have our outdoor gear, regardless. Rain or shine, we will have a terrific time, Thanks in advance! And I still think you should play "I Don't Live Anywhere" at Red Rocks, it would be so perfect.
I don't know if it will top last years Muddy Wolf show, that was awesome. We will be there tonight, this will be my 4th Colorado show in the last 3 years.
LIGHT IT UP JOE!!!
I just got home from the show. It was incredible. Even more polished than the videos we've been watching. They just keep getting better.
I know attendance has been an issue at some shows, but it was not at Red Rocks. Joe sold all 9000 seats for the 2nd straight year. The crowd was very appreciative and fairly well behaved during the quiet solos. The weather was a typical perfect August night in Colorado. Low 70's, slight breeze, rain earlier in the day, but not a drop during the show.
I just saw him 4 months ago on the spring tour in Colorado Springs, and tonights show was simply on another level. The backup singers, the horns, the incredible talent Joe surrounds himself with.
I can't wait for the next time.

Traveled from Illinois and Joe did not disappoint. It was an incredible show in one of the most beautiful and majestic venues in the world. From start to finish it was fantastic.
My coworker tested me it was "freaking amazing".
It's been a crazy week for me since the show at Red Rocks Monday, but I wanted to take a minute to share my thoughts.
In general, the show was amazing! I thoroughly enjoyed it and cannot wait for the DVD/CD release in the future to revisit all these songs and this band performing them. I truly love the Muddy Wolf show. Getting to see Joe perform that set at Red Rocks last year was incredible and truly a bucket list type moment for me. It will always be special to me and that DVD/CD set is one I watch and listen to often. However; for me, the 3 Kings show far surpassed it. The band was truly on fire and everyone seemed to be having an amazing time together. Love the addition of the background vocalists. For me, I just enjoy the music Joe performed by the 3 Kings more than that he did with the Muddy Wolf set. That is not at all to be negative about that show or those musicians and their respective catalogues. Both of these tribute shows are wonderful. Just for me personally, I prefer the 3 Kings. I have been truly blessed to see Joe many times live ( in the teens) and I would say this show is in my top 3.
It was amazing to me ( although I should know better by now) how Joe is able to do back to back sets by these 3 masters of the blues, who have very different styles, using different guitars to honor these players, and do each one of them complete justice. In addition, it was so cool to see what Joe did vocally for these sets as well. It truly speaks to Joe's enormous talent and his respect for those who have blazed the blues trail before him.
All 3 sets were phenomenal. For me, my favorite was the Albert King set. Love the song choices, and cool to see Joe tearing it up on that flying V. Also very special to see Joe paying tribute to BB King who means so much to Joe.
Selfishly I was hoping Joe might slip Chains and Things in the BB King set as I absolutely love his version of that song. However; knowing he did it previously I knew it was a long shot. I should clarify I did not look at the setlist ahead of the Red Rocks show in other posts as I wanted to be surprised. very hard to resist all the posts.
I was surprised there weren't any videos of the original artists between the sets like last year. In going back now and reading the previous 3 Kings show posts it seems like there were originally but not anymore. They had the screen going at Red Rocks so they certainly could have done them again. I am curious why they were cut out. Hoping they show up in the DVD.
I was disappointed in the limited amount of merchandise and that there was not a 3 Kings specific shirt this year. I bought the generic tour shirt they had with the Red Rocks date on it, but was expecting a 3 Kings specific shirt since they had the 2 designs last year for the Muddy Wolf show.
I ran into Austin Young before the show and had a nice visit with him. If you recall, Austin is the young blues artist from Colorado who Ron and Joe presented a guitar to last year. I have seen Austin a bunch of times over the summer and he is still tearing it up on that Les Paul. He told me that he and his band were at the show as guests of Joe. So, very cool to see Joe still connecting with and supporting, Austin. Not that I expect any less from Joe.
I absolutely love the band Joe has compiled for this show. One thing I will say though is I am not sure I see the specific need for Kirk Fletcher. I am not at all begrudging Kirk or Joe's decision to include him in the band. I love Kirk. I got to see him play at the Blues from the Top festival over the summer with his solo band plus Reese Wynans and it was a tremendous set. One of my favorites of the festival. Kirk does a fine job playing rhythm and he played well the couple times he was featured for solos. I guess I just don't see him being a necessary or critical part of the band. When I think back to the band overall I would say he stood out least for me overall and feels like maybe he is underutilized. Tough for anyone playing guitar to stand out when being directly compared side by side to Joe. Again, not trying to be negative at all. Just a comment. Kirk certainly did not detract at all and is more than capable as a blues player.
On the flip side of that coin.....Reese was phenomenal!! He stood out to me in a huge way and what he continues to add to the band overall and Joe's sound specifically. I am so thankful Reese is still playing with Joe. in my opinion he is a perfect compliment to what Joe does.
My last observation is just how cool it was to hear Joe talk about what a privilege and honor it is for him to play Red Rocks. He mentioned it multiple times and how humbled he was. He said he was so happy that again there were over 9,000 people there supporting the blues. He said as soon as they got off stage last year they all huddled up and agreed they needed to do it again and figure out a new show to get them back there this year. He ended the night by thanking everyone for 2 of the best hours of his life.
Thanks everyone for reading my novel and suffering my opinions. I truly hope many of you get to experience this show live. For those of you who can't, you should truly look forward to the DVD/CD release.
Awesome review Konkman! Really enjoyed reading that. In reference to your observation regarding the merchandise available I believe the original 3 Kings merchandise had to be pulled because of a licensing issue with one of the "Kings" and that is why there were only tour shirts with a vague reference to the 3 Kings. Thanks again for the in depth review.
So impatient now after that great review Konkman. I've held off on the vids but did peek at the set list.

Drove from Long Island, picking up my son (he's 44, I'm 64) in Detroit along the way. The Red Rocks concert was the center piece of a 5100 mile road trip that was an amazing father/son odyssey through the heartland and into the Rockies. Joe was perfect, the band was amazing, especially loved the back up singers, Reese, and Anton. As Joe said (talking about the set list), "It doesn't matter so much what you play, as long as you play it well..." and man, did he play it well. Great night! My last Red Rocks concert was the Dead in early eighties. Joe joined Jerry in my personal hall of fame. Thank you Joe, you made our road trip the memory of a lifetime. And thanks to the more than nine thousand great fans that we shared the moment with. You guys were all great company on a perfect night!

Love the road trip stories. And with your son!! I did a much shorter, 300 mile, trip with my brother to see this show in Bangor. I think there are a lot of people who share your sentiments.

I was there, second year in a row, and was unexpectedly pleased by Joe's covers of these classic songs. I have to admit I watched Natasha's videos of the show from the east coast before the Red Rocks show and did not get much enjoyment out of the videos so I told myself, "It's Joe, you will like it", and I did! He always seems to make what I consider old (kind of boring) blues songs his own and gives them a sound I love.
The sound mix was perfect. Joe was perfect! The band was perfect! We were rocking in our wooden seats!
And I too was hoping for "Chains and Things" and was surprised he did not include it but understand why.
Even though I was not very familiar with the songs he chose, he made them all sound ROCKING! I just love this guy!!
Thank you Joe for another wonderful show!! You are simply the very best!
