Topic: Keeping The Blues Alive at Sea Cruise 2016

So many great musicians on board for this cruise. Saw some acts multiple times and others only once as time would allow. Great to see ones we had never heard before and nice to see some of our favorites. A nice treat was Josh Smith's set on the pool deck. Joe came out a played two songs with him and Eric Gales played one.

Here is Josh Smith's show from the Stardust Theatre. Beautiful sound and lighting. He had Johnny A and Eric Gales join him on a few songs. Josh's standout song is "Penance". It is a beautiful instrumental and people really need to check it out. His song "Pusher" is also a real fun funky tune. As Joe said, Josh is the man. He is an unbelievable guitarist and Joe has stated he is one of the few that Joe fears smile

Re: Keeping The Blues Alive at Sea Cruise 2016

Really enjoyed Gary Nicholson (Whitey Johnson). He is a renowned song writer from Nashville who has written most of Buddy Guy's recent songs including the ones on his most recent Grammy win. He and Reese Wynans are good friends and Reese sat in on the majority of the set. They were having so much fun playing together and it was really cool to see. Paulie Cerra and Lee Thornburg also joined in as thehorn section and the rest of the band was comprised of Jim Suhler and the Monkey Beats (Chris Alexander on bass and Beau Chadwell on drums)

Re: Keeping The Blues Alive at Sea Cruise 2016

A very impressive show by JD Simo. He played one night in the Stardust Theatre and that place has the most beautiful sound and lighting. JD did and incredible version of "I'll Always Be Around" were he sat down on the front of the stage and at the end, sung with no microphone. It really is something to see.

great work Natasha, I will be enjoying these for days to come. I must say WOW to seeing Eric Gales with an LP, in all these years I've never ever seen him play one. I have to wonder if he borrowed it from Joe. Glad you all had a good time of it, I sure wanted to make the trip but have some serious head issues with cruise ships and wide open spaces. I would have liked to meet Joe for the first time and also to give Eric a big hug, haven't seen him in several years now.

Eric was just kind of walking by and didn't have his guitar with him, so he borrowed Josh's LP replica. And it was kind of funny because Josh uses 13's on his guitar, which is pretty insane, and afterwards Eric told Josh, "Man, that was like playing with barbed wire!" Nobody likes to use Josh's guitars because of the heavy string he uses, but there was no way he was going to be playing "Spot", lol. Eric is a bit hard on guitars smile

I bet $$ he has already played spot and probably thought it was very easy to play. 13 on a les Paul man insane Strats yes have seen that but LP holy crap the stress on neck must be incredible. Funny what Eric said

13 is the start on the bottom E string ??? Then I probably don't want to know what the top E is. Eric can play most anything, except a left handed guitar......methinks he doth protest too much....lol

Re: Keeping The Blues Alive at Sea Cruise 2016

Davy Knowles' show from the last night. He was the last show on the last night and the poor guy wasn't feeling well. He had woken up that morning with chills. But professional that he is you never would have known because he played a stellar set. Missed the first few songs because of the overlap with the Alligator Records Jam. The cruise schedule really make it tricky to see everything. He did a fantastic version of "Almost Cut My Hair" and after "In A little While" they turned the lights on, but Davy wasn't done. He begged and we all begged for him to be allowed to do one more. And thankfully they let him continue.

Johnny A's set from the first day on the boat. We had first heard Johnny at the Les Paul Celebration in NY last June. He only does instrumentals and sometimes it's hard figuring out the titles when this happens. Really tricky when all you have is sound bites from Amazon and the artists webpage. Glad he helped me out with a few.

Re: Keeping The Blues Alive at Sea Cruise 2016

There was an extreme amount of wind during Beth Hart's show. We were late to find a spot since we had just come from Gary Nicholson's show and the only place I could stand was on the top deck. There was a couple there who must be fans of my youtube channel because when they saw me they allowed me to take their spot at the rail. Very nice of them to do this. I would not have been able to see otherwise. The winds were gale force up there and it was all I could do to hold on to the rail and the camera at the same time yet I also couldn't allow the camera to touch any part of the rail or it would pick up vibrations from the music. It was really difficult and my body was killing me afterwards, but I really wanted to get this show because Beth and her band were only allowed to play one time on the cruise. So needless to say there is quite a bit of wind noise. Fortunately Beth's vocals sounded great from this spot. People told us afterwards they couldn't hear her at all down in front so I'm glad the sound was otherwise good where we were.

Josh Smith's set from the first day up in the Spinnaker Lounge. Kirk Fletcher was supposed to be with Josh on the boat, but unfortunately Kirk had a death in the family and wasn't able to be on the cruise. Josh was pretty bummed to not have Kirk with him, but his absence did provide us with a chance to really hear Josh go all out with his playing which was cool to see.

Davy Knowles' full set from the first night. You could really feel the boat rocking from side to side up in this venue. Don't know how Davy and the guys were able to stand and play. They all put on a great performance. Wish the sound had been a bit better. Somewhat muddy and quite different from Josh's set that had been in the same venue earlier that day. Guess they had a different guy mixing.
