Topic: Drive - the new song

https://youtu.be/euMNVyuqmwo

Downloaded this yesterday...have played it many times since.  I love it!!

Joe's voice is great on this, as is the double drum attack, the bass and the subtle backing vocals of Mahalia Barnes, Jade McCrae and Juanita Tippens.  Kevin Shirley has done a great job on this track.

Can't wait for the new album!!

I downloaded this in full 1080HD and watched it on my tv and through my sound system.  Tremendous groove.

Re: Drive - the new song

I like the vibe of the song, good groove, great playing, love the backing vocals, but the lyrics aren't up to the standard set on DSoB.  High hopes for the album, though.

I love it! Classic retro-California surf vibe cruising up to Mulholland Dr. Bit of Afro-Cuban rhythm tossed in. Gretsch is perfect with that reverb.

Some of us, me included, have been calling for something a little heavier, but you can't argue against quality and class.  Love this cut.  Can't wait for the album.

The only thing we deserve, is an opportunity.  Everything else has to be earned.

Re: Drive - the new song

I like the song a lot.I think it sounds different than what Joe normally does.Which is a good thing.I know he and KS try to do different things.
It's not just that it is different,it is a real good song.

My grandson now knows who "Joe Massa" is after listening to this a few times in the car yesterday.  Start 'em out young.

P.S.  I love the whole vibe of this song.

I have to say after the initial talk about the album I am still a little disappointed it's not the 'heavy blues' album originally spoken about. Drive is a decent song, but nothing I'd rush out and buy. It is one of the first times I'm having a wait-and-see attitude on a Joe album. I still want to hear Joe completely unleashed in a power trio setting.

Re: Drive - the new song

Odd selection for a single, or as a tease for the new album. I think I would have preferred to hear the title track or Mountain Climbing. Nice song, but as NickelWound said, nothing I'd rush out and buy. Just my two cents!

Re: Drive - the new song

We heard live versions of 4 of Joe's new songs on the cruise this week. Check them out. I think they are all quite good. My favorites at the moment are "Blues of Desperation", "Mountain Climbing" and "No Place For The Lonely"

Re: Drive - the new song

Would have loved to have been on that cruise and heard them live.!!

Re: Drive - the new song

Awesome, Natasha! Heard a little snippets from the vids but stopped, want to be as much surprised by listening to the album the first time as much as I can!

Re: Drive - the new song

Some good clips of Blues of Desperation - sounds pretty heavy, and I'm digging this:

In the meantime if you want to get your heavy blues on check out the new album by Simo. There is a thread in other Artists.

+1 to the Simo comment.  I can't figure out why this guy isn't selling out 2000 seat venues coast to coast.  After hearing 3 live sets from him on the cruise, I can tell you that the live versions of those songs make the album feel a little boring.  They truly shine live.

I'm mostly positive, but slightly on the fence with what I've heard from Blues of Desperation.  It is a bit heavier than recent albums, but not the "heavy blues" I was expecting.  Different Shades of Blue to me was a breakout / career defining album and it might take Joe a few more tries to top that masterpiece.  Not every album can be a Zeppelin II.
