Topic: Anyone else miss the Marshalls??

Let me start of by saying, not here to flame or make anyone mad.......just wondering if anyone else misses the marshalls too?

Look Joe sounds great no matter what playing....but noticing a trend with the fenders, since notes don't sustain as much with fenders as do with Marshalls a lot of solos all now feature this fast vibrato to aid in keeping the notes ringing.......mind you, has always had in arsenal as technique, just wasn't heard in every solo which with the fenders I hear now.

Wonder if the amp in some aspects has aided in phrasing ( no effects or pedals ) volume, tone and fingers to get job done.......but has changed the style too.......as we know all different amps make us play different and I am sure he is really enjoying the change, and will listen to him regardless of amp, but I think fenders create some redundancy in themes not present with 4 amp set up, as amp variety allowed for more tonal options which allowed more avenues of expression / phrasing.......am I whacked in my thinking??

Re: Anyone else miss the Marshalls??

If it's sustain you want, check out this clip @ 3:45, Skinner and those Fenders are about to explode...!

I get what you're saying though. Joe's used many amps throughout his career and the Marshall has always been the foundation of the tone.
He's never been one to stand still and given his change to more traditional blues songs at the minute, it is the Fenders on stage. I'm sure the Silver Jubilee will return at some point.
For the record, I will always strive for the 2009 Royal Albert Hall tone, Sloe Gin and Blues Deluxe are simply perfect. For such a high gain set up the dynamics are truly outstanding...

JB shows: Newcastle 2015, Hammersmith nights 3&4 2015, Calling Festival 2014, Newcastle 2012, Bridlington 2010
Guitars: Gibson Custom Shop Les Pauls; Skinnerburst #018 (Aged), Texas Burst (Heavy Aged), Fender Custom Shop Strat '63 Relic
Amps: Mini Jubilee Head, Carol-Ann Satin

Re: Anyone else miss the Marshalls??

I also miss the Marshall's. Don't get me wrong, the vintage Fenders are awesome, and I love the tone, but I miss the tone that first grabbed me, the 2009 RAH tone. The first song I ever heard from Joe was STOP, from the RAH show, it still gives me goose bumps. I wish he could have the Fenders and Marshall's both on stage and switch back and forth depending on the song.

How I’d love to see you smile....

Re: Anyone else miss the Marshalls??

Yep, miss the Marshalls but I can hear that the vintage Fenders are a better fit for the recent more traditional blues sets. Hopefully the old Jubilee based rig will be back at some point as I miss them and the older blues based rock material.

That's not in anyway meant as a critism as clearly Joe is continuously evolving and improving as both an artist and a player. However for all Radio City is without doubt his most accomplished video release to date I'm simply more a Rock Palast kinda guy most days.

Re: Anyone else miss the Marshalls??

I love the Fenders, especially combined with the old Flying V or the ES-335.  I can't say I miss the Marshalls although I loved that tone too.  But I prefer the Fenders.  He really goes for it on the vibrato and note bending with the Fenders.  Some Gary Moore vibe where you think the strings surely can't take anymore but he keeps going.  His tone would be more similar to his old rig if he was using his old pedal board with the delay and the Pork Loin or Tube Screamer.  With the Fender rig you can hear how crystal clear and expressive his technique is.  I love the Angel of Mercy videos where he plays the Flying V and the All Aboard videos with the ES-335.  This new rig further proves just how good he is as there is nothing to hide behind.  Crank an old Fender with some reverb and kick a drive pedal on as needed.  Awesome tone with a clear path to his emotional playing.

Re: Anyone else miss the Marshalls??

I always enjoy the rig changes.  Current trip down vintage Fender lane is great.  But I too look forward to the return of Marshall tone some day.

Re: Anyone else miss the Marshalls??

I like both rigs. One question though, has any of you seen the new JB clip with the Jim Kelley head? I think this sounds awesome and would be a very nice sound for future tours.

Re: Anyone else miss the Marshalls??

I miss the old Budda days also. Said that a few times here but, it's not like I don't like his tone now. Just that it was what I first heard JB playing so it is nostalgic to me. That said, the tone at the Borderline was ridiculous (in a good way).

Re: Anyone else miss the Marshalls??

The Rockpalast back line was a Marshall Bluesbreaker combo and a Budda Superdrive 80-2x12

(if I could have bought that Budda that was for sale in the 'market place' section, I would have..)

(If only I had 1% of Joe's guitar talent)

Re: Anyone else miss the Marshalls??

I'm enjoying the Fender rig right now, I'm loving the sound.  I wonder if he does go back to the 100watt amps if it will be like before or a differant kind of set up.

Actually, it would seem it was a JCM 900 hooked up to the Bluesbreakers speakers because the amp wasn't working.

Re: Anyone else miss the Marshalls??

I'm not as up to speed on all the different rigs and what they consisted of, but I think my favorite JB tone was Live at RAH - I thought that tone suited his music and complimented his vocals well, as well as fit in with the rest of the band. However, I also totally understand and can relate to wanting to change it up, and thats just my personal preference as a listener. He sounds like "Joe" no matter what he plays through.

This is a silly thing, but I also like guitar tone with more reverb/delay - I personally don't enjoy the sound of a dry amp. As rich as the breakup can be, I think adding some ambiance is very pleasant to listen to.

Re: Anyone else miss the Marshalls??

I too think the RAH 2009 tone is the best I've heard from Joe. For me nothing before or since has matched the sound produced by the various amps and signature Gold Top Les Paul on Sloe Gin.

Re: Anyone else miss the Marshalls??

Not only do I not miss for a second the Marshall's bit if we can get 'Goldie' or that old EC signature strat back in his hands Joe's journey back to the dark side will be complete. big_smile

Re: Anyone else miss the Marshalls??

I miss the Marshall tone. I sometimes don't feel like lugging my Marshall half stack to smaller gigs so I grab my Fender Hot Rod combo. It doesn't take long before I regret it. Don't get me wrong I'm not saying that only a Marshall is a good amp. What I'm saying is that for me, the sound in my head is a Les Paul and a Marshall. Same as my picture. Joe will sound good with any amp but for me he sounded best with the Marshall based rig.

Re: Anyone else miss the Marshalls??

My experience tells me smaller wattage amps can be pushed without Heavy Metal volumes and are fabulous, not many fenders do that however.
I do not enjoy parlor clean sound but some sustain and chords are breaking the blues into a vibe unlike a Princeton for sure.
Marshalls at lower volumes are bright and awful mostly , no mojo til pushed imop !
