Topic: Any PRS Fans?

Hey all
Just got my hands on a PRS S2 Custom 24 and I absolutely love it - which sort of surprises me, as I've always been much more of a classic 50s/60s guitar person - anyone else PRS owners? I'm new with it, so initially I'm all in "that phase" - just wondering who may have had them and played them for a longer period of time.

Re: Any PRS Fans?

I used to have a swamp ash special - great sounding guitar, well-balanced and looked great and the 25" scale length feels really good.  I like a lot of things about PRS guitars, and every one I've played had a lot going for it.  I just don't like a 10" radius, though, so I didn't keep the SAS and it's prevented me from buying other models.  If they came with a 12" radius standard (Santana's are 11.5", but they're not my thing) I'd probably own at least one.  For the price of core models I expect stainless frets, too, so that's kind of a bummer.  On the plus side, there are tons of used ones out there waaaaay cheaper than new so you can certainly get deals.

Re: Any PRS Fans?

Hi Jack
Well I had at on point 12 PRS guitars. I had all the top end ones. Well I only have one now I guess that says it all. For me at the end of the day Les Pauls and Strats only felt right to me. The only one I kept was a P22 which has dual output, Pizo and electric that you can blend. It has a unique tone. At the end of the day I guess I am 90% a Les Paul and a 10% strat guy.

Re: Any PRS Fans?

Cool! Yeah - its something very different for me too. I actually tend to get everything used, I'm not a collector so for me it doesn't really matter the condition they're in. One of my very favorite guitars is a really worn, beat up Gibson LP Classic that my wife surprised me with as a gift. Its like Clapton said - if they're that worn when you buy them, then that means they play and sound great (or else the previous owner wouldn't have played them so much - I'm paraphrasing. + I don't have an English accent, although I did have to learn a Liverpuddlian Dialect for a play I was in once)

But I digress - I tend to be more of a Gibson/Fender guy overall, but I'm too much of a lover of guitars to settle. I go through phases. Right now I'm really enjoying the PRS. One of the things I appreciate about different guitars is how they inspire different music. Whether I was playing a Les Paul into a Marshall or a Tele into a Super Reverb (or a PRS into a... what do they pair with? Mesa?) could totally change the direction and dynamics of a tune.

Re: Any PRS Fans?

I currently own 10 PRS.  The DGT is my favorite.  In my honest humble opinion they consistently make the highest quality guitar.  Will always like the Les Paul but equally love PRS.

Re: Any PRS Fans?

I just bought one, SE Custom (low end model) and my son just loves it. Somehow I managed to post the wrong link to it, it does have the true F hole and not that ugly gull wing looking cutout. It also has a beautiful quilted / figured two piece top. I played it a little, very satisfied with the quality and sound.

As corn through a goose, so are the days of our lives

Old "lawsuit" Singlecut.....fantastic top, build quality is miles better than Custom Shop Gibson...:)

sounds awesome
I had several special lot PRS guitars and a few single cuts and the tops were beautiful but the best way I can put it is they seemed processed not a original look. Maybe it was just the heavy sheen they apply. It is all dependent on the user. To me a PRS cutaway and a les paul are completely different in feel and appearance. For me the Les Paul Custom shop units are by far superior. Thats what is great about the guitar there is no wrong answer it is all up to the player.

Fully agree.  I had one of the so called 'Lawsuit' Singlecuts and quality, IMO, was not up to my R& or R6.  Major thing though is that the Les Pauls sounded better to me, so got rid of the SC.

I have owned several PRS and found the pickups on all of them to be weak sound and lacking the punch I get with a Les Paul.  Only kept two PRS; a Santana III which has the best pickups on all the PRS I have owned and a McCarty Brazilian, which plays nice and I can just about bear the pickups.

True up to the player.... & at that time this particular PRS " lawsuit- singlecut" was better than anything else I came across.
-so thats why I replied to this PRS fan link....I'm not knocking Gibsons currently produced...

Totally understand that's why guitar is great. It sounds and feels different depending on who plays it. No right or wrong totally up to the player/listener

Maryland PRS luthier ping!!

Re: Any PRS Fans?

I agree that they're totally different - mine has the maple top and mahogany back, and humbuckers, yet is really not very similar to a Les Paul.

Re: Any PRS Fans?

For some strange reason, I've never been able to bond with most PRS guitars I've tried.  I LOVE the look of their guitars, but when I played them, I never felt moved.  That is, until I tried one of the first edition PRS Mira's a few years ago.

LOVE that guitar, and it is one of my favourites.  Replaced my SG for rock playing.  In fact, my son has now 'stolen' that guitar for gigs with his thrash metal band.  You can imagine the looks he gets walking on stage at a metal festival with a PRS!! big_smile

Re: Any PRS Fans?

This thread actually reminds me of a (sort of) PRS related story that happened to me.

A few years back, I was on a business trip to Singapore, and in a spare moment between conference sessions, I decided to visit some guitar stores over there.  I found a shopping centre that had something like 12 (!) guitar stores all next to each other in the basement - heaven for a guitar geek!  Spent hours there, and I highly recommend anyone who visits the island drop in for a gawk..

Anyhow, I was walking past the window of one of the stores and I noticed that they had a whole bevy of beautiful PRS Private Stock guitars in the window.  Total eye candy.  So I walked in.  Talking of beauty, I was astounded to see that every single salesperson, manager and worker in the store was female.  Very cool.

As I walked among the rows of great guitars, I noticed a young lad, probably about 16 or 17, who was very obviously a beginner player, sitting on an amp and playing a gorgeous flame top PRS Private Stock Custom guitar.  Price tag was I think around 7 or 8 thousand dollars.  The poor kid looked nervous.  There was an older chap, who I assume was his parent or guardian, hovering around him and asking him "Do you like it?  If you like it, we can get it.." repeatedly.

The poor kid seemed really awkward and hesitant.  I think he felt that his abilities were beneath the guitar or something, and eventually he shook his head and they handed the guitar back to the head sales lady and they walked out.

I noticed the sales lady was wiping down the guitar and removing the plastic stick on protectors (yes, they cover their high end guitars with plastic protectors before they let you play it!) so I thought I would head her off at the pass before she put it back.  I walked up to her and asked if I could try the guitar out before she put it away again.  She was obviously pissed off at missing out on an easy sale before, because she looked me up and down condescendingly and barked "Why? Are you going to BUY it??".

I stayed calm and said well, I really wouldn't know that until I could try it out, could I?  She remained sullen, but plugged it into the same amp and let me sit down and play it for a bit.  It was a nice guitar.  Lovely workmanship and aesthetics, but as I mentioned above, the guitar really didn't grab me like most others.  Also, I didn't have a spare $8000 in my back pocket to burn.

While playing, I noticed out of the corner of my eye, the same kid and his dad walk back into the store.  The kid took a seat on an amp opposite me and politely watched me for a while.  When he saw that I was finishing up, he leaned forward and asked "So, do you think that is a good guitar?".  I smiled at him and said "I think it is a GREAT guitar".  He immediately turned to his dad and said "Yes, I think I'll take it".  The sales lady was watching the whole thing and her jaw hit the floor.

I handed the kid the guitar and winked at the befuddled looking sales lady as I walked out of the store.

Great story!
Not guitar related, but Singapore related. I've flown in and worked there many times over the years in the shipyards. Your finding of all the like stores in one building is akin to what I found. When searching out some electrical parts and stuff for a project I was working on, I asked a taxi driver (they know everything) and was directed to a certain building. 12 floors of nothing but electrical and electronic supplies and sales. I was amazed at the variety of parts available. Everything from cheap utility to high end and super quality gear.
