Topic: Tech 21 RK5 Fly Rig

Has anybody tried the Tech 21 RK5 Fly Rig? Any owners?

I wonder how it sounds through a tube amp and whether you could stack it with other pedals, like Chorus, Phaser and the like.

Re: Tech 21 RK5 Fly Rig

Kotzen only plays through tube amps. He designed the pedal and is using it live. I just saw Winery Dogs last week and his tone was fantastic. I am sure it will play well with other pedals, but maybe someone has actually tried one out.

Re: Tech 21 RK5 Fly Rig

I have the RK-5 as a backup rig and occasionally for practice..... sounds great into the desk or into effects return of a tube amp (bypassing the preamp) - rather frustratingly it doesn't include a tuner!

Re: Tech 21 RK5 Fly Rig

Dave, how does it sound into a tube amp without loop, i.e. not bypassing the preamp? Obviously a clean amp, something like a Bluesbreaker, Bassman, or anything similar. I'm planning to use it as a stripped-down, grab'n'go backup rig.

Re: Tech 21 RK5 Fly Rig

dave, i suppose you plug into the loop to take advantage of the Sans Amp feature of the pedal, right? How about just the overdrive/delay/reverb portion of the pedal? Does it soud any good through the front of the amp? Yeah no tuner is a bit of a bummer but it does have phantom power so you could connect a tuner to it and not carry any extra adapters or batteries. Well let me preface with: it can power a wah pedal that way, so I am thinking a tuner may work also.

Re: Tech 21 RK5 Fly Rig

Sorry, I've no idea how it sounds in the front.... I've tried through the full PA with good results and used it once at practice bypassing the front end on a Peavey Windsor Studio amp I'd borrowed.

The production model doesn't have phantom power and the reverb effect is part of the Sansamp section ....the delay, overdrive and boost are good but I find the RK has too much gain really - if I was buying again I'd get the standard FR5 instead.

Re: Tech 21 RK5 Fly Rig

Thanks for responding, Dave. The RK5 seems like a gain monster, but can it be dialled back? It seems to clean up quite well with the guitar's volume pot, too.

Re: Tech 21 RK5 Fly Rig

Yep, it can be dialled back and works well with the gain below 12:00 and it also cleans up well from the guitar volume pot .....the tone knob on the RK5 covers a lot of ground too

I have the "regular" FR5 and have used it in front of both a SS amp (Tech 21 TM60) and tube amps (BFDR & Nace)...worked well in both situation...I have also used it straight into the computer to record with...again it worked fine...haven't tried it yet with other pedals but for the price, size and ease of use, it will always be in my gig bag...later.

Re: Tech 21 RK5 Fly Rig

I tried one in front of a clean amp. Not for me.
