Topic: Grainne Duffy/Female Irish Guitarist

I read about Grainne in the Fretbuzz section of Guitarist, she sounds a little Bonnie sound to her.  "Bluesy Americana from Ireland...who says she has earned some respect & the times are changing for women guitarists and even the SRV  & Rory Gallagher fans are accepting her."  Her 2 favorite guitarists are: Peter Green & Keith Richards.  Favorite Gear:  Gibson Les Paul Standard & Marshall DSL2000.

gsj-I'd assume Joe's CD's aren't sold through this outlet, however they are using his name to sell others music, which is kinda' free advertising/exposure for Joe..this is all my take on it anyway.

My wife is a redheaded irish girl.  She can cook but why should she?  4-5 days outa 7 that's my job.  Come to think of it, she can play, too...just won't.

I've been looking on iTunes. If I don't see bands there, it's like they haven't quite arrived yet.  I got BackDoorSlam as soon as they got on iTunes. I'll see if Duffy is on there as well.

It took a few years to finally be in the same place at the same time as Grainne & her band, and the anticipation I had was more than justified as it turned out. Saturday night at Hartlepool’s Belle Vue may not have had the biggest of audiences largely due to a festival going on elsewhere in town, though several people drifted in rather that wait for that events headliners to take the stage; for their pains, they were treated to a great show. Grainne has a superb voice and her skill on the guitar, while not fret-burning, reminded me a lot of Thin Lizzy during Eric Bell’s tenure. If that wasn’t enough, Grainne is backed up with a second guitarist, Paul Sherry who also has a smooth and lyrical touch.
They took the stage for the first set and just picked everyone up and carried them along on a spellbinding mix of Irish Americana. I so wanted to keep the Irish metaphors down, but they’re the aural equivalent of an Gaelic Coffee - smooth, rich, slight smoky aftertaste, but with a kick to make your eyes water.
For the 2nd half of the set, they stated off acoustic, the Grainne and Paul exchanged acoustic & electric between them, and built up the power of the set until Grainne’s arresting take on Rather Be Blind which earned the band a call for a blistering encore.
I’ve wanted to catch this band since first hearing their cover of Thin Lizzy’s Southbound, which Grainne told me after their show, they were never entirely happy with that take; I was more than happy with this gig, I can tell you; really recommend that if you haven’t already, check them out (or buy the new “live” CD).
