Topic: Erick Steckel new cd Black Gold

His new cd is a thumbs up for me.
This one has more of a rock vibe then blues.
After a couple listens I think it is kind of VATA territory at times. Some great guitar work as to be expected.
Also his picture on the cover, let's say he has a new look. And he doesn't look like that fresh faced kid anymore lol.

I haven't heard it yet, but it's on my list of "must haves"!

thanks for tip loved the last one

Re: Erick Steckel new cd Black Gold

I acquired Black Gold through Eric's Facebook page, he posted that the first 100 who asked would receive a signed copy. he ended up signing way more than that and I got my copy straight from him about two weeks earlier than anyone else.

In a word, it is fantastic. Awesome album from start to finish and does drift into more rock than blues but you can hear the blues undertones in almost every song. He is also an accomplished Hammond keyboard player and it is featured prominently throughout the album. So far I favor the odd numbered tracks 1,3,5,7, and 9 with 3 and 7 being instrumentals.

I think the hit single is supposed to be "My Darkest Hour" but my favorite is a hauntingly beautiful track called "What It Means ( To Be Alone)".

Oh yes, I just heard of him but I'm already a die hard fan!

Re: Erick Steckel new cd Black Gold

I accidently came across this chap via Instagram when he posted a photo of a Strat just like the one Joe played for Trouble Town in London back in March. I bought Dismantle the Sun and I was impressed. I shall buy Black Gold now ...

Re: Erick Steckel new cd Black Gold

Just got it from Amazon

Very good

Listening now

Re: Erick Steckel new cd Black Gold

just listened to What it Means and Darkest Hour on the utube, I like them both a lot but not sure yet if I will buy it. I did run into this little gem cover from last November, for those that are not aware of his great guitar skills.

Re: Erick Steckel new cd Black Gold

Well, my copy finally arrived via CD Baby - it's the torchlight processions and polishing on swan's down that slow the postage....

Anyway, when Eric rocks out, he really rocks out, as the "grungy" image cover pic suggests but he's really at his best on the two tracks mentioned above, What It Means and Darkest Hour. Have to add If I Ain't Got You to that list where Eric edges into Matt Schofield territory, where I feel he should explore a bit more, rather than the loud pedal so much. Speaking of "sound alikes", I think Hamilton Loomis is gonna be wondering when he recorded Outta My Mind..... Love the instrumental tracks, Texas 1983, and El Camino.

Eric can rock, but get past that and there's some tasty stuff.
