Topic: Auralex Great Gramma and 4x12 on castors

Has anyone here used their Auralex pads in this way with any success please? Will the Gramma still isolate a cab on castors or are the castors already doing part of that job?

I'm in the midst of changing live rig and I don't currently use a Great Gramma with my 4x12. However I use a smaller Gramma with my 2x12 upstairs at home to help reduce the noise downstairs.

I've noticed my new head has a lot of nice bottom end when the 2x12 cab is sat directly on the pad but this mostly disappears if I take the Auralex out of play.

I'd ideally like to retain the full range of sound for live use. But my 4x12 is on castors and as someone else kindly transports it for me I don't have an option to remove them.

Re: Auralex Great Gramma and 4x12 on castors

I would think the Gramma only works to its full potential with a cab without casters, i.e. the cab should have full contact with the Gramma. I'd remove the casters on the cab and use a Caster board to haul it around. Something like this:

Re: Auralex Great Gramma and 4x12 on castors

Thanks, that's what I'd expected.

However the trolley may be an option, even though I thought it wasn't.

Our singer looks after my cab as I can't do heavy lifting anymore. But he has two full LD Maui 44 system's with extra subs and the larger version of those very trolleys.

I'll have a word with him at practice this week.

PS. Any other experience or views on whether castors are definitely a no go for the Auralex?

I may be wrong but the way I see it the casters of the cab do what the Gramma does, which is separating the cab from the floor. The additional advantage of the Gramma, however, is giving that extra bottom end because the cab sits squarely on the pad.
So putting a cab with casters on a Gramma is pointless because there is no contact between the two.

Re: Auralex Great Gramma and 4x12 on castors

I'm not a player but I have some common sense. Lay the cab on its side. wheels will then be off the floor but still on the cabinet. Only problem would be the cabinet emblem would be sideways. If your cabinet is stereo then it will change left and right to top and bottom.

Yep, not sure that common sense approach applies for my new cab though ;-)

The Auralex is to dampen the low end frequency rumble transferred to the floor not enhance. The wheels need to be off

Re: Auralex Great Gramma and 4x12 on castors

I have a couple of these pads that I used to use in the studio...

The pad should serve to decouple the cab from the floor. The reason for this is typically to dampen transfer of vibrational energy (to keep the floor or stage from rattling and keep family or sound guys happy). The byproduct is that decoupling typically reduces bass response and keeps the bass you do hear more focussed. Small pads are often used for studio monitors that would otherwise sit on a desk, etc, to ensure that the bass response doesn't get hyped or blurred by the coupling effect.

If you are getting more bass response by using the pad, that is interesting... Is there more bass, or the bass just seems more focussed while on axis with the speaker? The latter could be expected. The former would be counter-intuitive, but could have something to do with the room acoustics and phase cancellations, I guess.

Regarding your question about using casters with the pad... My first thought would be to worry about the cab being unstable and falling or rolling off the pad. If you have that part solved, the pad should still perform its function of decoupling the cab from the stage or floor. The casters would have already reduced the coupling effect, so the perceived difference will likely be less dramatic.

Hope that helps!

Re: Auralex Great Gramma and 4x12 on castors

Thanks, the perceived improved / focused bass is probably a result of not having a cab directly placed on the upstairs floor boards. It's quite boomy in the upstairs room and the one directly below without the pad.

I've noticed the bass sound is more usable on the pads with every head or combo I've owned in the three or four years I've used the pads.

I'll be keeping the castors and living without a Great Gramma for my new setup. I'll EQ accordingly whilst being mindful of the floor / stage construction.

Thanks for the feedback.

True that tiger would not look as cool on his side.

My floor rattles less with the Auralex. I have a vertical 2x12 with no wheels loaded with EVM12L-black labels.

It even take it to gigs. Requires little to no EQ adjustments from room to room. Pretty consistent.
It also tells the sound guys that you care about sounding good, so I feel they do an extra good job once they see them. lol

Yup they do add consistency and are also awesome for studio
