Topic: Joe Satriani on what makes a great guitar player

Surfing YouTube and found this mostlly foreign-language (to me) video on Joe Satriani, with a brief interview portion in which Joe explains what he believes makes a great guitar player....see if it rings any bells for ya:

On the subject of what makes a great guitar player, Joe Satriani says:

To be recognized as a truly great guitar player you have to figure out how to learn to be expressive with your special message...whatever that might be.

One thing taht you find out quite soon if you go to a school where there are a thousand guitar players or if you're a professional and you're playing constantly with other bands that play is that there are a lot of guitar players who can play fast, who can stretch their fingers, who know all the chords, who've memorized the notes and the scales, so there's no shortage of players who are very good at mechanically playing the guitar...

But finding the one guitar player who has an original sound and who can write and play a song that makes you cry, or makes you excited, or makes you look inside your soul and just makes you feel happy...that's a gift, that's a special gift.

Reviving an old Satriani Thread instead starting a new one ... to post a tv PSA:

Joe will be on Fallon tonight (Tues 8/4/15) ... not sure if he's sitting in with the Roots ... or playing a spot.  (Comcast has recent Tonight Shows on On Demand as well in case you miss it.)

"I was in Space for less than 2 weeks … and suddenly Jeaniene’s back … half the Band is off the gd wagon … we have comedians opening for us … and the nice kid that ran our website is now a kleptof’nmaniac.  Boy ... did you guys miss me!!"  Phil Valentine - Road Manager - Staton House Band

JBLP#251 (unaged) ... thank you Ron.

He was indeed. (I'd would been a bit nervous with Don Rickles as main guest. smile

Tried to find a performance link on Fallon's Tonight website ... or Tube ... no luck yet (Comcast On Demand will have for a couple of days)

... but did see an artice ... his latest release Shockwave Supernova charted at the highest position on the BB 200 of his 30 year career ... at #19 (and #3 on the Rock chart.)  Congrats Joe Satch.

(Article has a Vevo audio link of the title track.) ... but here's the direct YTube link: https://youtu.be/xeAUOsu39bc

Of the couple of new album tracks on Joe S's YTube channel ... On Peregrine Wings deserves a listen if you like his music ... has the old Joe vibe I remember when first introduced to his music ... has great drums in it too!: https://youtu.be/c_6qqyS2jRw

He's touring in a few months in Europa with Dan Patlansky. This South African guitar player is amazing.
