Topic: The dream job

Cant seem to get this out of my head, I'm retiring in 6 years from this job (Postal Service...yuck!!) And I want to start a different career, whats the name of that guy who travels all over the world and gets paid to do so...Steve is his name, cant think of his show. Well that is exactly what I want to do. Can you imagine what that would be like...SWEET!! My wife tells me to apply to the airlines, ya got to go stand by, but so what. Yall got any dream jobs of your own?

I think you already know the answer to this. Photographer for Sports Illustrated or National Geographic.  Unfortunately most of the Nat. Geo. photographers are now contract instead of employees of the magazine. Makes your job security a little less stable. Working as a concert photographer would also be cool but it is a male dominated area and except for a few lucky ones, there is not much pay in photographing concerts. sad

Hey Shred...isn't dream job an oxymoron? I just want to travel and hear music...So far nobody wants to pay me to do that! But, anything with the word "job" in it (stop it boys!!)..denotes work and work means responsibility, and I find this whole grown-up thing overrated....  Anybody want to adopt a Granny? I'm very good with kids!     Cathy

I'm serious when I say this, you could make a living at your love for photography, your heart is begging you to try and do it. You dont want to be babysitting them high school kids. I dont think i ever told you the story about a "lunch date" with a high school teacher of mine. I had the biggest crush on her, she was the coolest teacher I ever met. I would go back once a year after high school just to say hello, she finally retired a few years back, hope she's happy!

I love teaching guitar, the ONLY downside is that I sacrifice much of my family time in doing so because I work nights.  Kids just grow up way too fast. 

So, I would have to say my dream job would be a Luthier.  Combining my passion for art and guitars.  My husband and kids are also very musical and artistic as well--it could be a family business!

I've already got my dream job and am counting to retire from it in about 7 or 8 yrs. I've been doing pro translating and interpreting for over 25 years now (inc. teaching ESOL English in Europe), but it wasn't always "dreamtime" for me. I worked the factories, boats, cleaning lakes, assisting people with handicap, etc. before that....I know where I come from! smile

I sure whish you lived closer becaue if you did, we'd already have about 4 months of lessons in. However, if you ever become a Luthier I'd like to place my order now for a new guitar now. Hey, can't get on that list too soon!! smile

Roy,
Check this guy out.  He's practically in my backyard and he's not the only local luthier making instruments of this caliber.  There was actually a nice write up about him in an issue of Vintage Guitar about a year ago.  Be sure to check out his guitar called the "Rose of Sharon".  I don't care who you are, it's absolutely breathtaking!

I'm with you, Cathy. My dream "job" is being me. Whatever that might mean any particular day.

Thanx BluesMan. I appreciate that. My dad worked in a steel mill for 50 years...so did I for some years even though I got higher education....always thanx to my family smile. I believe any work is work, but if someone gets higher education like me and others and SUCCEED, why not try something better? Anyhow, I will never forget my dad's origins, no matter what political systems, govts., politicians and even unions say!
