Topic: Marshall/Van Weelden/Carol Ann Rig

Wonder how long before the "rock" rig makes a return...? JB is very much in vintage mode these days but there was still bucket loads of tone in those rigs...

JB shows: Newcastle 2015, Hammersmith nights 3&4 2015, Calling Festival 2014, Newcastle 2012, Bridlington 2010
Guitars: Gibson Custom Shop Les Pauls; Skinnerburst #018 (Aged), Texas Burst (Heavy Aged), Fender Custom Shop Strat '63 Relic
Amps: Mini Jubilee Head, Carol-Ann Satin

Re: Marshall/Van Weelden/Carol Ann Rig

Well, Joe is not dissimilar to most guitarists.  We spend hours/days tweaking and getting our 'perfect tone', but after a while, hanker over something new and change up.

I like his 'old' tone AND his new one too - both have something special.  I like that it changes too - prevent each album every year from sounding 'samey'.  One of the things that I don't like about some of the older artists that stick to the same rig for decades is the lack of variation in the guitar tone.

Changing guitars/amps does wonders to reduce listener fatigue, and heck, I believe Joe has one or two spare guitars and amps that need to be thrown into rotation from time to time... lol

Re: Marshall/Van Weelden/Carol Ann Rig

I wouldn't mind hearing the Kelley rig again. One of my favourites...

Re: Marshall/Van Weelden/Carol Ann Rig

Hate to be the one to say it but I'm not liking the new tone. I much prefer the Marshall tone. A Les Paul and a Marshall is just the sound that's in my head. It's been that way since Clapton with Cream (I know a lot of that was an SG but you know what I mean).   I've never stopped liking Clapton for going away from it after Cream and I will always be a Joe fan as well. I don't need change from my favorite bands. The reason I started listening to them is because I liked their tone in the first place. Angus still sounds like Angus and nobody is complaining.
Not being a hater here because Joe Bonamassa is still the guy that I get inspiration from whenever I plug in. Just an opinion from a guitar player that's stuck in the sixties.

Re: Marshall/Van Weelden/Carol Ann Rig

I miss the Budda rig! It's what made me buy a Budda amp (which I am selling now, see marketplace; shameless plug) because I just picked up a 1963 Brownface Fender Deluxe. Have to be financially sound. I am also glad that he is picking up strats for the past couple of years. That Borderline gig, strat into the Jubs was heavenly. Nobody alive today can work a strat's dynamic range like JB.

Amp: Firebird Musical Amplifiers
Guitars:62 LP SG , 02 FB VII, JB FB I, 76 Electra Omega, 64 Firebird V, 73 LPC, 61 Custom Tele, 59 and 60 Melody Maker
Effects: Mythos Chupacabra, Strymon Deco/Flint

totally agree, I still hanker after a gold sparkle strat!

Re: Marshall/Van Weelden/Carol Ann Rig

Yeah but like Devan said, it is nice to change things up every so often. New sounds can inspire.

Re: Marshall/Van Weelden/Carol Ann Rig

I would not be surprised if he revisits everything as he moves forward. Personally I love the changes.

Re: Marshall/Van Weelden/Carol Ann Rig

I totally think that his new minimal rig brings out the best playing in Joe.

Re: Marshall/Van Weelden/Carol Ann Rig

I live in hope that Joe will return to his Marshall etc. rig.

I have been listening to guitar based music, especially Blues, for over 50 years and when I "discovered" Joe in 2010 I was blown away by his tone. For me the sound on the 2009 RAH CD/DVD is probably the best I have heard. Joe is without question a great guitarist but his tone was also exceptional.

I recently bought the Muddy Wolf Live CD and whilst it is great Blues music, I find the guitar tone to be generic in comparison to the Marshall which with the many effects used was instantly recognisable as Joe. To my ears, there is nothing in the current tone that sets it apart from other guitarists using a similar rig. Don't get me wrong, I love the sound of a cranked Fender amp (I play a Fender amp myself) but it is not distinctive as the "old" rig was and does not cry out "...that's Joe Bonamassa".

+2. Pretty much what I was saying.

Re: Marshall/Van Weelden/Carol Ann Rig

Is it more song content with the Muddy dvd vs tone?
Just saying that some don't find the Waters and Wolf songs as appealing in their current 'retro-Joe' format as opposed to Joe's rock'n style?
Since we know from the past that Joe did 3-4 of his own songs per CD and the rest were his rock-blues take of songs unlike DSOB are all his.
Have to watch what I type here as Joe is heading into the 3-Kings tour soon and will probably be the same Wolf/Waters rig

(I'd love to have Ron's rig too wink )
And Macg,,, if I lived on the other side of the border we may have been talking about that Budda by now sad

(If only I had 1% of Joe's guitar talent)

Re: Marshall/Van Weelden/Carol Ann Rig

I'm a fan of a the smaller band, and thicker guitar tone (marshalls).
The horn section is very BB King to me... which I thought was necessary because BB didn't play and sing at the same time.
The small row of Fender amps isn't awe inspiring, and the tone doesn't have the beef I like to hear when JB plays. That said, it didn't stop me from seeing him this year. However after the 3 Kings show, it might be a while unless something in his rig changes or some new music wows my heart.
