Just wanted to share this message that Johnny A. wrote on one of my videos from the Les Paul Celebration:


"...so, every once in a while one gets to experience a "special" moment in life, and I've been lucky enough to have a few. Being a fan and a friend of Les', this Les Paul Foundation 100th Celebration was a big one for me. To be able to share the stage with such immense talents as Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Neal Schon, Steve Miller Band, G.E. Smith, Warren Haynes and Joe Bonamassa is something we dream of as little kids in our bedrooms as we struggle to find a voice and a little spot in the this business we call music. On this particular night, when this moment came, I had to struggle through it due to equipment malfunctions...it was devastating to me as it was happening in "real time" (I actually walked off stage at one point). I want to send a personal "shout out" to my very good friend and and extremely talented artist Joe Bonamassa who not only encouraged me back to the stage, but handed me his guitar cable allowing me to have my moment. Thank you Joe, you are a true artist and friend. ja"

I saw this on FB and am not surprised at all that Joe would help out a friend, must have been such a relief to Johnny A, something that he will never forget.

( I also noticed several comments by people about Joe kind of standing back in some of the group photos from that night, which I attribute to Joe's "shy side and humbleness" or else everyone else stepped in front of him...lol... but man, oh man, watch out now when he stepped to the forefront of the stage for his solo wink  )

Joe and Johnny A have been friends for a long while.  I took this picture back in 2009 in Northampton, MA of the two playing together.

yes Joe is a class act for sure. Another but not as well known is Gary Hoey

Agreed!  Also, I'd add Joe Satriani and Steve Vai to that list.  Very down to earth artists.  It's always cool to see such humble talented people.

Too bad that they couldn't have come up with a cord for Johnny before the end of the song.. Joe had to grab back the cord.

I think they were a little short on cords. Before the show even started Joe had to go out to Guitar Center and buy himself a cord, lol. Good thing he got one that worked or they really would have been out of luck smile

Reading about this situation with Johnny takes me back to a similar situation I witnessed with Joe back in 2009.  Joe was headlining the Mile High Blues Festival in Denver.  Joe invited Ryan McGarvey on stage to play Further on up the Road with him.  ( 1st time I ever heard of or saw Ryan was at that festival by the way.  I have now see Ryan over 10 times). 

They began the song, and Ryan's amp stopped working.  Ryan and the crew were scrambling to figure out the problem.  Without even looking, and while still singing, Joe unplugged his guitar cord and held it out for Ryan.  Carmine grabbed it from Joe, handed it to Ryan, and Ryan was able to plug in and play his solo.  Joe moved off to the side and let Ryan play his solo and be featured.  It was a total class act moment from Joe and I have never forgotten it.  There is video of this performance somewhere on YouTube that I have seen.

Thanks for posting this, Konkman!  It was driving me nuts trying to compose the same thing because I could recall the event being a Colorado festival, and the actual song and situation (forgot Carmine's handoff though), but couldn't recall the date or whether it was Greg Koch or Ryan McGarvey. 

Seems like there was another similar incident somewhere...my memories are a little extra skewed and screwed these daze...I recall Joe at multi-artist "super jams" at a NAMM and Crossroads festival, cannot remember if he had problem and assistance from others or was left out, or even if he actually had problems at either...sigh...But Joe is always ready to help! big_smile. And step aside to make sure the focus is on the current performer. cool

I bet a lot of others would help, but the part I thought was interesting was the situational awareness, where it looked like Joe was more aware of someone else's issue than a lot of the other players were.

Definitely very cool and gracious of him.
