Topic: Long tracks or short tracks, preference?

So I was looking at murfdog's post of top 5's, and it got me thinking about my top 5 but also which songs from them I like the most.  I had this discussion with one of my best friends not long ago, I introduced him to Joe (hey, what are best friends for?) and in that discussion he also mentioned he preferred Joe's shorter tracks.  The longer ones seemed a bit too self indulgent, he said.  He likes it when the artist just gets on with it and moves to the next song.

To get directly to my position on this, my most played playlist is titled "Long Tracks".  The shortest song is 7 minutes, longest is 23:31 minutes, any guesses on that one?

Joe holds 17 positions on that list, "Django/Just Got Paid" and "Tea For One" get a lot of air time.  But it's tracks like theses that show me what kind of artist they really are, where they are showing their artistry, putting it on their sleeve.  I love it when they get lost in their music, that's the real stuff.  And for me, similar to Joe I think, the live versions of these long tracks are the best.

My guess for this crowd would be that the longer tracks are favoured.  And for those in favour, I would love to know your favourite long tracks.

I already mentioned Joe above, two more...

Led Zeppelin   "No Quarter" and "Since I've Been Loving You"

I suppose it all depends on what you decide is a "long track".
Are you using seven minutes as your benchmark?
I have noticed that when Joe plays live, most of his studio songs are extended into longer versions.

Re: Long tracks or short tracks, preference?

Ever since I heard CSN&Y's 4 Way Street, in the early 70's, especially "Southern Man" and  "Carry On", both over 13 minutes long, I have loved getting lost in a song.  Hard to do that in a 2:32 pop song.  Might be great for radio, so they can get their commercials in, or listeners with short attention spans.  Back a few years ago Steve Miller, who is my arch enemy, because he is the worst singer, song writer, musician in the history of the world,(not an exaggeration, I have had a pure hatred of Millers so called music and have forever), criticized Joe's songs for being to long.  I knew at that point that Joe was the best ever.

Re: Long tracks or short tracks, preference?

I like good songs, regardless whether they're long or short.  smile  IMHO long tracks work great in the context of an album with a variety of tunes.  I don't know that I'd want to listen to 10 10-minute songs in a row.  That said, I still vote long - there's just something about those epic tracks with a lot going on that really grabs me.

Just a few off the top of my head
Machine Gun - probably the best ever
1983 ... A Merman I Should Turn To Be
Voodoo Chile
Memory of Elizabeth Reed
Whipping Post
...And Justice For All

Re: Long tracks or short tracks, preference?

Getting lost in a song...nailed it bobkatmsu!  And two awesome long tracks you mentioned

The shortest on my playlist happens to be 7 minutes long, by no means a benchmark but when looking through my song titles those just happened to be the best.

Zeyer...Voodoo Chile, bet that one is on a lot of play lists!

Maybe, but I'm not talking "Slight Return" - I'm talking the Voodoo Chile w/ Jack Cassady and Steve Winwood.

Re: Long tracks or short tracks, preference?

honestly I've never understood AM Radio's 2-3min track run and FM Radio 5-6 min track run.
I don't think the 'lets get on with the song' and 'too self indulgent' is correct thinking.
as long as the song is going somewhere then it stays interesting

The only song I think of .. "OMG this thing is a dead horse and move on" is in Layla..
I get Duane was a great player in all. but the ending seems to run long.
I don't find that in pretty much any other song; esp in Joe's songs.. they always seem to be going somewhere.

(If only I had 1% of Joe's guitar talent)

Re: Long tracks or short tracks, preference?

My favorite long song is UFO's Love to Love. The build at the end... OMG! Not all that long at 7:40 but long enough.

I devoured Layla in its entirety for a long time but in recent years I find myself sometimes skipping over the instrumental.

Re: Long tracks or short tracks, preference?

Both long songs and short ones can be great.
I can't say I could just pick one over the other.
But I'd love long songs when they are good.
Some favs that come to mind.
1)Machine Gun Hendrix
2)Dazed and Confuzed Led Zep
3)Can You Here Me Knocking Eolling Stones
4)In My Time of Dying Led Zep
5)Green Grass and High Tides Forever the Outlaws
6) Kern Evil  9 ELP
I would be temped to put Free Bird in Here if weren't for such overpayment and it's almost become a joke. But I remember when it first came out it was such a great song.

Re: Long tracks or short tracks, preference?

Well...I suppose this is a big cop out, but I like both for different reasons...The longer tracks have some of Joe's best extended solos like Pain and Sorrow, Sloe Gin, Reconsider Baby, etc...I don't think Joe is "self indulgent"...I'm hoping it's the fact that he knows the reason people go to see him is not for his singing or songwriting, it's to see him be "self indulgent" on guitar, not that he is a bad singer or songwriter...He's great, but all of you out there raise your hand when I ask if you go to see him play wicked amazing guitar...I bet there's about 90% of you with your hands up ! His short tracks are great because they tend to be more upbeat like "Who's been Talkin?", Mosquito's Tweeter, etc...I love Joe's Rock side and that encompasses most of his shorter tunes. Self Indugent...ha ha...every time I see Joe, I tell him to keep making those solos even longer !!

My favorite "long tracks ever would be "Dazed and Confused" from Zep "Do You Fell Like I Do?" from Frampton and , of course Ted Nugent's "Stranglehold"

Hearing of that one always reminds me of another favourite, I'm sure RUSH fans will know this one "La Villa Strangiato".
