Topic: Who's your Top 5 ??

So, in the Chris Rock movie "Top Five" one of the things the characters talk about and, hence the name of the film, are their 5 favorite rap artists....So it got me to thinking "Who are my top 5 ?"...Now, like most of you, I'm a big Blues, Rock, Classic Rock fan, so I'm definitely not going the rap route here...I'd like to know your "Top 5" in this genre, or , heck any genre...How about...your top 5 musical acts....,that's about as all encompassing as you can get.
Having set the guidelines, here I go with mine...I must say, a strange and eclectic mix. These acts just also happen to be the only 5 acts I will still pay $$ to see LIVE...These are not in any particular order, because I love them all.

     1. Joe Bonamassa(It would just be rude not to make him 1st on the list, It's his site !!)
     2. Jack White(and any Jack White projects)
     3. Toadies(these guys are better than ever and so much more than just "Possum Kingdom")
     4. Y&T ! (Best hair metal band ever)
     5. Led Zepplin (The best Rock band ever! Period.)

So, who are your top 5 ?

Re: Who's your Top 5 ??

Top 5 is too absolute, but interesting anyway, so I'm giving a more elaborate answer :-)

I've listened to way more blues than jazz recently, but averaging over time:

- Joe
- Dave Brubeck Quartet
- Led Zeppelin
- John Coltrane
- B.B. King

Runners up: Sonny Rollins, AC/DC, Allman Brothers, Clapton, Frank Sinatra, Buddy Guy

Bands I only discovered in recent years that could end up in my top 5:
Tedeschi Trucks (Made up Mind is a perfect album)
Samantha Fish

Re: Who's your Top 5 ??

It is extraordinarily difficult to make such short lists, especially if one's taste in music is eclectic. My rule in this case is: If I could only have five artists' music with me on a desert island, etc. (I'd be permitted to have their entire output, of course). My list...

  • Joe Bonamassa - At the time I found Joe, I honestly believed I'd never find a new artist who could excite me about guitar-based music again. Joe not only did that, but did it playing the style of music I loved most growing up, blues-rock.

  • Maynard Ferguson - I had the pleasure of seeing Maynard and his big band live on three occasions.

  • The Who - First saw them live in 1970, less than a year after Woodstock. Saw them two other times, 1971 and 1975. Really tough to explain to people who weren't there just how great a live act they were at their peak.

  • R.E.M. - It is not hyperbole to suggest that Murmur saved my life back in 1983. Sadly, only got to see them live once.

  • Arthur Rubinstein - His playing fascinates me on SO many levels...

Re: Who's your Top 5 ??

Wow! Even more heavily leaning toward classic Rock than I thought. Lots of Who and Zep fans out there as I expected. It's nice to see great acts like Dave Brubeck and REM being mentioned....So many great artists and musicians out there ! I see many of you added your runner-ups....I wanted to stick to my original 5, but I have to say that the DLR Van Halen and Joe Jackson have both been giant emotional influences in my life...Oh...and those 1st 2 Rickie Lee Jones albums are AMAZING !

In all honesty, I just listen to Joe on an everyday, jump in the car kind of day. One time I threw a Neil Young CD case in my car and when I pulled the CD out, it was Joe.  I just surrendered to it  wink

...still thinking on the #2,3,4,5 slots on the All Time list (of course Joe is Number 1 Slot here, too)
