Topic: Phoenix Show 4/30

I went to the show last night at the former Dodge Theater, now called Comerica Theatre.  I want to start by saying the show was fantastic.  Loved the set, the energy...was great.  I have a problem with the venue and the crowd.  At first I thought it was just me...a mood, but then I heard other people talking.  I was seated in what they call the club level.  It's the first balcony.  Shame on me for not getting seats on the floor.  I thougth it would be better in the center of the balcony than the wings of the floor.  The acoustics were subpar.  I sat next to a big wall in the middle of the theater.  Here's the biggest issue though.  People getting up and leaving constantly throughout the concert.  In the middle of songs, when it's quiet, when it jamming.  Nonstop!  I don't mind people getting up and going to the bathroom, but this was crazy.  People were standing in the area behind the seating talking and laughing all during the concert.  People all over had their cell phones out videoing the concert...I could see the screens all over the place.  The lady in front of me was checking her facebook page.  A guy behind me was shopping for WWII memorbilia.  It was so strange!  I don't know if this is due to bad luck, mood, venue design, the fact they serve alcohol during the entire concert...no idea, but I was very disappointed my experience was diminished.  Had to vent!  I'll still see Joe next time regardless, just hope it's a better venue/crowd!

Re: Phoenix Show 4/30

Hock: I've noticed this concert audience trend at several concerts over the years. This is not limited to Joe Bonamassa concerts. It is very annoying! Stay in your seats and shut up! I want to enjoy the music and the concert!

Re: Phoenix Show 4/30

I'd rather be standing the whole time!

I guess it's similar t movie theaters, where people act like their in the livingroom, and not in a theater.

Re: Phoenix Show 4/30

I went to one of the recent Hammersmith (London) concerts and there were people wandering in to take their seats 20 minutes after the concert had started. Didn't notice too many camera phones in fairness. Yes it can be off-putting but not much can be done to prevent it happening.

Re: Phoenix Show 4/30

So annoying...Many artists discouraging their audience from this type of activity...Jack White will simply stop playing if people aren't totally into the show...It's really bad when people carry on conversations during quieter or acoustic tunes...It just ruins the mood...shut up and watch the show or leave ! Instead of watching the show, people are recording it on their tiny cell phone screens...It's much more rewarding to just watch and experience the show. Well, at least Joe continues to jam profusely, regardless of who is watching

Thanks for the review Hock. I had to unleash my inner ogre last night at the Pearl in Las Vegas.  One man a seat away was chattering with his date non-stop. The dirty look didn't register so I had to lean over, yell at him and remind him I had paid to hear Joe sing and the band play, not him talk and to stfu! He looked shocked, but the rest of the show was missing his input and he left after a bit.
I won't abide that garbage.

Same at virtually every concert I've attended in recent years, regardless of who the artist is.  It's a societal thing, imho. No consideration for those around them...it's the "Me, Me, it's all about Me".  It's a party and music is secondary to too many.

I have a front row balcony seat for the show.  I've learned to hate being on the floor. If you're sitting in your seat listening, odds are you won't see the show.

My first post on the forum is to vent...apologies.  I love Joe's playing and look forward to finally seeing him.

Re: Phoenix Show 4/30

For all the reasons above I will never go back to the Hammersmith Apollo.

No matter how far you try to push the envelope, it remains stationery

I wish you could have come over and unleashed your ogre on the guy behind us on Saturday. We kept trying to shush him as did others to no avail. I looked back at him at one point and he was so drunk his eyes were practically rolling back in his head. Have to admit I've become kind of afraid to tell some people to shut up since it usually angers them and makes them more obnoxious. As if I was the one in the wrong for wanting them to shut up. Sometimes I wish I was some big scary guy so I wouldn't feel so scared standing up to them. Being a 5' 2" 105 lb female really doesn't make people quake in their shoes. I can give a pretty mean look though, which unfortunately only resulted in one guy giving me the finger, and then he threatened to pick a fight. I feel there is no hope for this. People are rude and disrespectful and the alcohol served exacerbates it.

Re: Phoenix Show 4/30

we have gone from bic lighters, beach balls and Frisbee's  to cell phones wow how the times change

Keep holding your ground, folks!  It's like that show with the zombies/undead walking around... only these creatures are full of alcohol and toting "smart" phones!  I guess I miss those Bic lighter days.  One shouldn't have to prep for 'battle' every time one goes to a concert.

Good on ya for standing up to the beasts and puttin' your Ogre on!

Re: Phoenix Show 4/30

For this very reason, Eddie will not go to the shows anymore because he WILL say something and then that ruins his time because of a possible confrontation that then causes more kaos at the show.  He will go to the M&G and walk me to the shows and pick me up (this year in Seattle, I am bringing 4 BonaVirgins) and we are staying over night for the two shows (Fri and Sat--can't get to the one tonight).  What finally did him in in 2013 when Joe was last in Seattle was some troll-hole RIGHT behind us who was drunk kept yelling throughout the whole show "I love you Joey!"  You can't say anything to these trolls because of all the things you said Tash.  Bullies are never wrong.

I think, what would help the situation is that if people are being boorish, overbearing, drunk, or disorderly at a show, the VENUE (with encouragement from J&R Adventures) should tell these people to shut the F up or leave.  And if they don't stop, they should be escorted out.  It's always the few that ruin it for the many.  We paid good money for our tickets and are there for the show not to listen to the trolls.  Just sayin'...

Re: Phoenix Show 4/30

BadKitty! Troll-hole is my new favorite name for these people! It seems like every show there are a handful. I try to remind myself before each show that there will be buffoonery and to try and ignore it.

Last night during a quiet part some troll-hole yelled out something like, "Each note's a spoonful, Jowwwwww!" What the heck does that even mean?

I think most of them do it for attention.
