Topic: HELP! In Need of Tone Tips

Ok guys im looking to complete my rig. Ill put up a photo so you guys can see what im running ... Basicly a les paul marshall setup but im kind of lost when it comes to speakers and i usually play small clubs/ pubs where i cant really turn up the volume much and i don't really know what kind of speakers produce what sound and what to look out for, because the Greenbacks and the V30's dont really hit it on the head for me. I recently got an original Tube Driver that sounds great and im stacking it with an Ibanez Hw tube screamer so it's really pushing the valves and the carbon copy delay with the strymon reverb are helping me get that Eric Johnson tone.

Anyway im lost in the speaker/cabinet department and i would be really greatfull if you could offer me any tips or some kind of guidance as to what to look out for, or what would be a good idea.

Thanks

I think you might get better technical advice posting on another forum like the Les Paul forum.
http://www.lespaulforum.com/
I've noticed that JB posts a lot more there than on this forum, plus a lot more folks with the info you need seem to surf there as well.
Good Luck!

Re: HELP! In Need of Tone Tips

JB was known to use EV speakers in his Marshall rig.. (don't think he changes speakers in his Fenders)
1- because the power rating was like 350w each and he could pretty much 'dime' the Marshalls and not worry about blowing a speaker
2- he claimed the speakers where 'transparent' and gave you the sound of the amp

I suspect it was because speaker breakup was pretty much nil on when you have 2x12 rated at 700w and you have a 100w amp.

we've talked a bit about speakers here before with some talking about CanabisRex and such
I'm not a good one to judge is my amps are set pretty low most of the time but I like http://wgs4.com speakers

Re: HELP! In Need of Tone Tips

I think alnico speakers can sound better at lower volumes than ceramics.  The trouble with copying big stars is they might be running a much louder rig and then the sound is completely different. Try speaker cabinets at the volume you will play at is my advice.

This link gives you an idea of sound on a lot of speaker options...

Re: HELP! In Need of Tone Tips

Ok, so if you are going for the dirty EJ type tone, then low wattage Celestions are the way to go. I have played several, and believe it or not, the EVH beats them all. Killer speakers and no it won't make you sound like EVH.

The JB tones are definitely on the EV speaker realm.

I think the best thing you could do, actually, is just invest into getting some plexiglass baffles. That way you crank those amps and still play clubs.
