There's is no doubt Joes voice has improved quite a bit.
On the other hand I never felt like it detracted from his earlier works either.
I'm not sure of his earlier vocals were more strained because he was trying to shed his acent from his homeland, Australia!

I tried (& failed) to subtly photoshop a kangaroo into the background of one of Joe's photos today just to have fun the with Australia comments.  Good to see Gary was feeling equally
mischievous.

That would have been hilarious!!!

I agree that Joe's voice is much improved and I prefer it to yesteryear.
That said, I'd never want him to go back and re-do previous albums like Blues Deluxe.
That voice fit that album at that time and is part of Joe's history.
However, if Joe wanted to add Reconsider Baby to the current setlist, there would be ZERO complaints from me!

Thanks, that was my point. I guess I just didn't express myself very well. That being said I'll probably ruffle a few more feathers by saying I think the old music was a lot bluesier and more to my taste.

nah you said it OK i think and i agree its a matter of opinion

i would agree with this except could care less about redoing reconsider. unless Joe wanted to of course....
but certainly not in favor of a joeriginal or a fresh cover but hey that is just my opinion!

its funny that you posted this hombre because just the other day I was thinking something similar. I am not going to say i prefer Joe's voice then overall but i got to thinking about it because whatever i was listening to at the time - oh yeah it was tour de force borderline - his voice and being so improved was quite noticeable. but at the same time i though how much i truly loved it before and yes was part of what attracted me to the music

since i was listening to TDF-B I will comment on the Pain and Sorrow thing, as I mentioned in other threads i did very much enjoy the TDF_Borderline version for its outstanding qualities along with the plain fact he brought it out for that show but in no way do i think it would be OK to re-do it for any official release, unless of course there were to be some sort of reunion show with Kenny and Eric (not wishing for that) and they finally got it captured live for a dvd - because as you may know i felt it completely unreasonable to have had it left off of the Rockpalast set list, wow was that wrong although i am sure it was all about logistics, i understand but IMHO it would be just so wrong to bring it back out again and to re-work it. please, just write another song.....
not that i doubt Joe could do a lot with it, it just would not be right to me. nor would it have any reasonable chance at being better. lets leave that on alone please wink
but it would be OK to throw an audience recorded version(pre2006) as an extra or something on a dvd.
of course it does not surprise me to have such a different opinion (all it is) than someone who favors When She Dances over the bulk of HTCT.....different strokes for different folks.....

anyway back to the original topic yea hombre i know what you are saying
its different
when I saw Lizzee's topic about Paladia for a second i thought she was saying that they were going to play all of Joe's live shows rather than the night was to be of all  Joe live shows.
I think it would give us some very good market research if we could get the feedback from paladia viewers if they had the chance to experience Joe via ANDY live and Rockpalast in addition to the other stuff. just would be interesting but as we all know, you simply can not know the unknown so we leave it unknown and don't throw it into the equation without clearly being aware of its unknowingness

I think it was a good point Doug made about the physical limitations etc and wear and tear on Joe's ability to sing

Jane, was Pain and Sorrow played at the Rockpalast show but just not on the DVD? I bet sometime in the future you might just see J&R release that baby.... or it might slip out from one of the people who recorded that show and has been watching it at home for the past 9+ years.... there's some detective work for ya! smile

Re: Joe's Voice

I checked my ANDY DVD and Pain and Sorrow was not on it. Pain and Sorrow came from the So It's Like That album
checking my Rockpalast (reminds me I need to rip that to MP3) Takin the Hit, andy, Blues Deluxe, Mountain Time, You Upset Me Baby, The River, Burning in Hell, Had to Cry Today, Heart of the Sunrise, Starship Trooper and I Don't Live Anywhere.. no Pain and Sorrow there either.
of some reason I don't have any of the Tour De Force's on my laptop at work.. have to 'fix' that oversight.

Anyways all is good.

yes that is correct regarding P+S. Sorry if what i said was not so clear, wasn't the first and won't be the last.

i got to thinking more about what I said. I realize i was being quite the Pain and Sorrow "purist". I don't like it when my purist side comes out except when my Blues purism shows its side. That is different than other blues purists though as my purism there simply means i think it is so pure that many things can be classified as Blues.

I had started thinking hey maybe I would dig hearing only Joe singing on Sista Jane. Then the BCC purist in me thought no that is not OK and the Joe purist in me told that other part of me, hey now so you can be unpure on that but not Pain and Sorrow? and I could then see my mistake.

of course it would be OK if Joe re-did Pain and Sorrow, who am I to say how wrong that is? I believe that and apologize for letting my P+S purism get the best of me. i'd like to explain why I fel so strongly about the pre2013 versions I have heard. The reason that I love the song so very much, as explained further in the Pain and Sorrow appreciation thread, is because it is not completely about the music or the singing/lyrics to me. The reason I love the song as much as I do is that when i listen to it, I am able to have intense positive, forward moving thoughts of improvement, thoughts of how to get to a better way, rather than to dwell in the pain and/or the sorrow. It is very uplifting to me. I feel that Eric's contributions in his performances help my subconscious get to that depth that is needed and Kenny's heavy steady playing keep it going to that place without hesitation or interruption. (more thoughts on bass and drums and history of both in Joe's works aside) That is part of why I get defensive about that song in particular.

i do think though there is no other good reason for any pureamassa attitude on my part. i can rely on previous efforts for my own needs and will give any future song or version of past song my open mind. its  part of the finding another way!
