For me it starts with the guitar. If I pick up a electric I play it without plugging it in. If it sounds good acoustically and resonates then you are more then halfway there. Next its in your fingers and how much of your soul you can project into it.
The amp is last. A good player with the other two attributes in hand can make the worst amp sound great. So the guitar then the projection of your soul through the guitar. The amps pedals and everything else are just tools to enhance what you already have brought to the table.
My two cents
Cheers Ron

Im with Ron on this one , my local Jam session has a Marshall MG100 DFX , thats it.
amazing the difference between players some guys can make that amp scream its in the fingers...

Yup the connection between the soul to the brain then to the fingers.

Re: What's the centerpiece of your overall sound?

I think the guitar is a big part of it, but for me it's frame of mind. Not to get crazy psychological here, but if I'm not in the mood it's just no going to work. And to add to the "guitar unplugged sound", I've honestly played guitars that sound thin and garbage-y when unplugged, but as soon as I plug them in it's a pretty stellar sound. I remember playing some travel guitar one day and I wasn't impressed with it, but as soon as I plugged it in it reminded me of the first 3 ZZ Top albums.

Overall though: humbuckers, tubescreamer, and a thick amp (not VOX wink )

Re: What's the centerpiece of your overall sound?

so do most people swear by the tube screamer as overdrive of choice?

Re: What's the centerpiece of your overall sound?

I got mine last year and I like it a lot. It seems to be a very popular choice based on how many times its been mentioned on this forum.

Yeah a tube screamer into a clean amp can get you to good tone pretty quick

Re: What's the centerpiece of your overall sound?

Gosh it's such a tough one...

My Hiwatt is very much the tonal reference, the guitar the connectivity.

Pedals would be the relish.

JB LP Goldtop No. 290- Aged...rather like me.
