Topic: Top 10 Modern Blues Guitarists

Here on the Gibson website there's an interesting article:

http://www2.gibson.com/News-Lifestyle/F … -2012.aspx

It seems we all know very well that guy at #1 smile

But where is Gary Clark Jr.?

I have some doubt on a few name that made the list.

Fender John Mayer, Clapton CS, Ash Tele Am. Deluxe; Gibson Les Paul std. 2005, Es-335 Bonamassa (JB328), Warren Haynes; PRS Tremonti 10 Top; Asher Ben Harper Sig. / Martin D41; Taylor 914CE; Takamine TNV460SC; Rockbridge SJ & 000-12/ Two Rock Custom Reverb Signature V3; Marshall TSL100; Fender Twin Reverb '65; Orange Tiny Terror, Blackstar Artisan 15 Combo.

Re: Top 10 Modern Blues Guitarists

I hate these "top 10" lists because they are always subjective and no-one ever agrees. How can I take it seriously when there is no place for Matt Schofield!

Re: Top 10 Modern Blues Guitarists

I agree about Gary Clark Jr.

I really like  Davy Knowles, though.

That's the whole point - it gets people talking and complaining ... and that's why they do it.

Re: Top 10 Modern Blues Guitarists

I get Gary Clark Jr.'s appeal.  I have His CDs and I listen to them often.  But quite honestly, he is not that memorable a guitar player.  He serves the songs just fine, but not Top anything.

I love Derek Trucks and think he should be higher up the list.

Walter Trout? I'd like to see who fell behind the #10 slot.

Re: Top 10 Modern Blues Guitarists

I don't mind the lists as everyone has their favs.
I am really not familiar wit John Mayers blues works.
I would have to put Philip Sayce on my list.
But he is a Strat player so maybe that's why he is not on there.
That might explain some other choices as well.

John Mayers album Try was a very good album.  To say the follow up album Paradise was simplistic, would be a understatement, IMO.  To me the tunes could have been played by anyone with a couple years of experience on the guitar and the lyrics were sophomoric.  I would never go to a concert.  His biggest fan base is 12 year old girls.  You can hear them screaming after every song on Try.  Not my cup of tea.

Try is the only John Mayers LP I own, although I didn't make the purchase. I happened to mention to one of my daughters that Mayers put out a blues LP that was supposed to be pretty good and it wound up being a birthday gift...It actually is pretty good.

As far as the list, it's ok with me. You can always pick at who else should be on or who should be in what position...but I think they got the top spot right smile

If you want to listen to the best Mayer you should try with Continuum. For me is a really good album, with really good songs. And to have a great "live" experience i suggest the "Where the Light is - Live in Los Angeles", also in DVD/Blue Ray, where he has 3 different sets: Acoustic - Trio (With Pino Palladino and Steve Jordan) - Full band.

Here you can find some real good blues and great tone. Unfortunately there's also some song for his teen fans, but it's more than two hours of show.
After that Mayer has turned to pop and country. I don't know if it's for commercial needs or for the problems with his voice, anyway for me the best of John can be found in TRY - Continuum and Where the Light is.

And honestly, live he can put on a really great show.

Fender John Mayer, Clapton CS, Ash Tele Am. Deluxe; Gibson Les Paul std. 2005, Es-335 Bonamassa (JB328), Warren Haynes; PRS Tremonti 10 Top; Asher Ben Harper Sig. / Martin D41; Taylor 914CE; Takamine TNV460SC; Rockbridge SJ & 000-12/ Two Rock Custom Reverb Signature V3; Marshall TSL100; Fender Twin Reverb '65; Orange Tiny Terror, Blackstar Artisan 15 Combo.

I would agree, love his approach and style, but technically he is not up there, - he plays with a capo! smile Good to see KWS in there, thought he might suffer not being a Gibson artist!

John Mayer is great imho - I 2nd the vote for Continuum.  Try! is pretty good, but I don't like that as much as some people seem to.  Born & Raised is a pretty cool album, too, there's some unique songs and i like the vibe.  Regardless, I wouldn't categorize him as a blues player.  He does play some blues, and it's certainly an influence you can hear, but it isn't really what he does per se.  It's not as big a component of his style and sound as any of the other guys on the list.  I get that it's a fuzzy line, and what "is" or "isn't" blues is never really clear and changes person-to-person, so ymmv.

Re: Top 10 Modern Blues Guitarists

Jack White at #3?  I haven't heard much of anything from him that I like, although I admit that hasn't been a lot.  What I have heard just sounded eclectic and sloppy.  I don't see him on this list at all.

Re: Top 10 Modern Blues Guitarists

Matt Schofield could easily replace half the guys on this list especially Mayer, Lang, & White.
