Re: Keeping the Blues Alive at Sea reports (start page 6)

I have found on past cruises that the rooms are a safe place to leave things.  But that is just my experience.  I have left money laying out, my camera bag full of gear, things can always happen but there is security on board.  The staff that looks after your cabin can be remarkable and they will look after you.

I would love to bring a guitar, mainly for one of the clinics.  But for me this cruise is just a part (big part!) of my trip.  To travel with that and my luggage would be a challenge.

I'm not too bothered by the schedule as it stands right now.  I see opportunity to take in all the "must see" acts for me, at least once.  There are a few though that if want to see them twice it's not going to happen.

Any idea of Joe's line up for his two performances?  He is going to be a busy man.  His own two shows, RCFP, fan photos!!  And, with any luck there will be some impromptu artist jams...should they find themselves with a spare second or two!

I leave 4 weeks from today, and I'm counting.  smile

Re: Keeping the Blues Alive at Sea reports (start page 6)

The only cruises I've been on are the Blues Cruises and that was Holland America. I seem to remember there being a safe in the room, but I also don't remember worrying. If it's the same, there will be a person to oversee a section of rooms. That's why I don't mind the built-in tip.

As for instruments, you may kick yourself if you don't bring your guitar. The jams are magic and the paid musicians may well show up to play with the amateurs. It says you can also bring a small amp. You can always ship it home after the cruise, or maybe there's a place in Miami that would rent??

I had meant to add this to my earlier post, there have been main vaults on other cruise lines I have been on. You check the items at the purser's desk now usually called Guest Relations. Not sure if there is a fee but I'm sure you could contact Norwegian to see if this is available.

I posted previously in the other thread and did not get a chance to get back to it. Anyone going early? If so any one staying in Fort Lauderdale on Monday that would be interested in sharing ground transportation to the port? I have not purchased through cruise line yet if there is 4 or more may be less expensive to purchase separately?

I think you guys are very lucky and so happy for you all.   Not sure about how safe a guitar would be but we had phones, cameras and tablets with us when we cruised and had no issues.

Oh to play Django with Joe (or Ana or Bernie or Joanne..) on my JBLP.  Currently sporting three injured fingers on my fret hand however. Not to mention that Les Paul is so frikin heavy.

I'm thinking...

We will be staying the night (16th) at the airport Doubletree, which has parking and a shuttle service for $10 per person.

Uber it. Cheaper than a cab and not as sleazy.

If I were going and wanted to bring a guitar, and didn't have one that wasn't going to make me nervous, I'd be tempted to pick up an inexpensive standard strat or tele. Made in Mexico models can be found new for $400 or so, and on those you can even unmount the neck, making it smaller still. The screws and screwdriver will have to be in a checked bag of course. :-)

Jane, and anybody else who is unable to make the virgin sail, Joe says "It's the first and hopefully not the last", so start saving your pennies. I'm getting to go this time because my roomie and grandchildren all contributed. Knowing it'll happen again means I too will start putting my pennies away. Internet is very expensive onboard. I don't know what happens in port but we will certainly try to post as much as possible wink  Also, there are rental guitars available. I saw a couple sites. Maybe forum players can get together and share the cost?

Re: Keeping the Blues Alive at Sea reports (start page 6)

From what we saw internet looks to be about $100 an hour so needless to say, any videos taken won't be uploaded until I get home.

Re: Keeping the Blues Alive at Sea reports (start page 6)

Hmmmm...rental guitars?  I like the sound of that, less risk.

Just watched some You tube of Jimmy Galloway.  I could learn a lot from this guy, his clinic will be great.

Re: Keeping the Blues Alive at Sea reports (start page 6)

This is really starting to get to me. I can not have a guitar to play while on the cruise. I am thinking to ship my skinner via Fed Ex to a Fed Ex station close to the port and pick it up then do reverse the process on the way home. Has anyone else done that?

If you're ok playing a less familiar (and precious) guitar, you could pick up a used guitar from GC. Then you could sell it back when you're done, which would be like renting it. Or hang onto it as a travel guitar for next time. I see Nashua GC has an Epi Les Paul for $350. It's certainly no skinner, but you could even find a used Studio and not risk checking an irreplaceable guitar.

Ron,

I'd be willing to bring an extra (I'm driving) if you'll take charge of it before boarding and return it before leaving. PM me if interested.

Wow that is so very nice of you I would never dream of doing that. What a nice gesture let me at least buy you a beer on the cruise. I will either bring skinner or one of my other ladies or someone said they rent.
Thanks again greatly appreciated
Cheers Ron

It wouldn't be any big deal. Just let me know if you change your mind.

Tick Tick Tick smile  If you look at the schedule, you will see the "Ded Nugents", playing a late night jam on Thursday. This is members of Joe's crew and should be fun. I've talked to Colin and we're going to have a make your own Ded Nugents tee shirt contest. The prize will not be anything big, I'm still working on that. Please join in. I'll have some things with me to help decorate shirts if you want to make yours on board.
