Topic: Walter Trout and Ralston Bowles

Saw Walter Trout at Milton Keynes last week at the Stables Theatre. He had an American singer called Ralston Bowles as support who I also enjoyed. He made his entrance to the stage from the audience entrance, walking to the stage through the seating area whilst singing unaccomanied. He wasn't introduced as such - just apeared from the audience !! What a great entrance. I wasn't sure at first whether he was a member of the public who had got a bit carried away.

Ralston then continued - from the stage this time - with a selection of superb solo songs accompanied by accoustic guitar or a bazooki.
He had an excellent stage presence - laid back and friendly with some humerous comments between songs. Great stuff. The UK postal strike meant he had no CDs for sale which was a real shame.

After the interval, enter Walter and band. It was the first time I have seen him but got exactly what I expected - great Stratocaster blues. He introduced a 16yo lad from Newcastle on stage for one song - a talent for the future. He "duelled" with Walter in a Crossroads type way, trading licks. This was extremely entertaining especially when they were exchanging phrases using the volume control which made it sound like the guitars were having a conversation.
Another really enjoyable bit was when the band were playing and WT used the great blues phrase "let's take it down a little bit" and the volume dropped whilst he played some more sensitive passages. Another "take it down a little more" got the volume even lower, and then another which had the guitar volume completely off. Strat played to a 400 seater auditorium with no amplification and you could still hear it (just!!). The comment "there's only one way to go from here" found the sound turned back to full volume for soaring guitar, bass, hard drumming and wild keyboards - very effective.

The rest of the band were really good. I'm not a drummer but I really enjoyed this guy. There was also a guy who appeared from off stage a couple of times for some Plant type vocals on a couple of songs.

All the guys were in the bar after the gig ala Joe and were all happy to chat and sign anything you asked them to. Absolutley great stuff.

Walter was great on stage, making sure that the band, the singer and the 16yo (sorry I don't know his name) got the applause they deserved. I liked Walter before this from CDs I have. Now I've met him he has gone up as a decent guy massively for me.

This theatre must be one of the best run in the UK. From the greeting at the door via the collecting of glasses from customers at the interval leaving the seating for the bar (real glasses!!) to the very pleasant chat with the knowlegable guy at the on site music shop (loads of JOE CDs) to the "careful driving home" good night when leaving it was a joy. Well recommended. Joe should play there - but with only 400 seats, just make sure I know before they are sold out !!

That Plant type guy is Andrew - he's one of Walter's road managers - I think he needs a
promotion and more stage time.

Excellent review Ges , thanks for sharing. Walters on my radar to see live.
I've got a couple of Walters cd's and his relentless dvd
and they're all great, I've GOT to catch a show ............Paul/JBrules

Re: Walter Trout and Ralston Bowles

Thanks Ges...

I didn't see WT in a small venue like that, but I did see him at an outdoor gig on a perfect night, and I weaseled my way up to the fence.....

It was the first night of the Pittsburgh Blues Festival.....admission was free with a donation to the local food bank.  And Walter just loved that.  He even ask everyone to pledge a dollar for every note he played!!

He played at another level that night.....not just because of the food bank, but he had just crossed 20 years clean and sober.....it was.....hell, otherworldly.....

They're at home still runnin' for bells

Re: Walter Trout and Ralston Bowles

Thanks for the review Ges! Yes, Walter is without a doubt one of the truly great guys you'd ever want to meet.

Re: Walter Trout and Ralston Bowles

Yeah Ralston Bowles is from my hometown, Grand Rapids; he's a hell of a songwriter.  I'm glad to see him get some recognition, he certainly deserves it.

I did wonder because he was at the mixing desk between singing on stage and was also at the desk selling CDs after the show and was English I think !!
He also took lots of time talking to the crowd. Seemed a really nice guy. He signed my CD but it was a squiggle so I didn't know his name.

Is he in a band ?
My space ??

Yep.

He had a list on the CD sales desk where you could leave your contact details as he didn't have any CDs to sell due to the UK postal strike. There were quite a few who'd gone out of their way to add their name.

Mines on it and I look forward to hearing from him as I'd like a CD.
They don't seem to be on sale anywhere in the UK or via internet searches (only in USA).

Hey Ges,

I'll 2nd what Lee just said. And truly one of the nicest guys on the planet! Just a short story which I've told before. After Walter's show in Milwaukee, we hung around to meet him and have him sign a CD. Lee took a picture of Walter, my wife and I and I blew it up to an 8 X 10 and framed it because it's such a great picture (Thanks Lee!!). Walter actually called Lee by name to have him take our picture. Anyway, while I was talking to Walter I asked him when he first started playing guitar. He said at 10 years of age. I told him that my son Ben is 10 and that I bought him a guitar and he had just started taking lessons. Well, Walter reached into his pocket and says to me, "Here Roy, give this Ben and tell him I used it tonight." It was Walter's signature pick and you could tell that indeed Walter had used it at the show. I almost fell over!! When I gave it Ben his eyes got as big as a full moon. What a truly wonderful gesture from a truly wonderful man.

Roy

P.S. Lee, I've got a 5 X 7 of that picture and I'll bring it to the HOB to show you how it turned out!!

Nice One !!

Re: Walter Trout and Ralston Bowles

Roy - you had the picture developed and framed the next day - and ours is still sitting in
Jeff's camara - next time I'll have you take the picture!  What an incredible show that was-
seen Walter many times and he never disappoints - we even got to see his kids play remember? I think the whole show was 4 hours long.

Re: Walter Trout and Ralston Bowles

Went to see Walter for the first time last Friday at Pacific Road in Birkenhead (Joe plays there in February). I was blown away, what a really nice guy and boy can he play. Superb band too! the drummer was soooooooo tight and only dropped one stick - amazing!) Seriously good guitar work from Joe. Now to see Joe and Walter togther must be a moving experience, I've seen them on youtube, but jeez, I'd love to see them together live. I got some nice shots of the band and also of Galston, who was excellent. Great voice and presence for a soloist. Great guitar work too. Here's a link to some pictures
