Topic: Carol Ann JB100 RED

Hi All
Attached is a pic of my new Carol Ann JB100 Red. This is a limited edition serial #2 of 10. I have only used it for 1 hr just picked it up. This thing is a monster. The tone is amazing.

Alan recently met with Joe and he said he should make available a very limited edition run of JB100 amplifiers based on his "red" amp. This amp was used for touring in the 2009 - 2011 time frame, but more importantly it was used for many recordings during the "Ballad of John Henry" recording sessions. It was mainly used as a lead solo amplifier, but was also used for several rhythm parts, including the "baritone" parts on the title track. A while ago someone asked on Joe's forum what amplifier he used for the overdriven solo parts in the tune "Stop" and he answered the Red JB-100. This amplifier differs from the other JB-100's that Joe owns as it was designed specifically for lead playing and recording. It is a 100W EL34 variant as opposed to 6L6's in all the other JB-100's.

This variant of the JB100 is covered in distinct red levant tolex and no other color options are available. It features 2 channels, mid boost, efx loop and 100W of power. Apart from this amplifier being capable as a stadium level monster, it can be used extremely well at lower volumes and also responds well to attenuators for players who want to push the power amp at lower volumes. Joe actually used a Palmer model with it.
I now need to re-track some of my tunes on my cd with this amp. I will try it with a Palmer speaker sim also. I can not what to see how the tone of this beast transfers to Protools.
Cheers Ron

Re: Carol Ann JB100 RED

Congrats on the nice amp! Alan builds some great stuff! I see you also have a Texas 50. I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts as to how it compares with the JB-100.

Re: Carol Ann JB100 RED

Very cool Ron.  I appreciate the back story a lot.  Amps are still mostly mystery to me.

I love that photobucket offers to sell prints at the bottom of the page, and even (right now) offers holiday cards with that picture. The guitar nerd in me thinks using those for cards this year would be pretty cool. :-)

Re: Carol Ann JB100 RED

Nice, the solo tone on "Stop" has to be one of my favorites.

Agree 100% as well.  That is one of the few guitar solos where when I first heard it, it literally made me Stop (ha!) and go "Whoa!".  The opening notes still makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up whenever I hear it...

Re: Carol Ann JB100 RED

Ron, perhaps I spoke too soon when I stated that you might have a Texas 50, but I noticed the JB-100 sitting on the Texas 50 in your photo, so I assumed you might have one. Maybe not?

At any rate, I currently own a Texas 50 and love it, but I've also been considering the notion of purchasing a JB-100 and was wondering what your take might be regarding the tonal differences between the two? I've heard Randy's (wishkahdaddy) description of the two amps, but it always helps to hear the thoughts of others as well.  Of course, I would likely have to pass on the JB-100 due to the price tag but, by the same token, it sounds like an amp that'd be right up my alley.

Keeping in mind I have not had many hours on either the Tex 50 or the JB100 RED I would say the JB100 red is just dripping with luscious harmonics and articulate feel. The Tex 50 is also a fantastic amp with similar tonal charecteristics with the JB100 red but seems harmonics are not as apparent. Do not get me wrong the TEX 50 is outstanding.  Of course this all is in the ears of the listener and to be honest once I have more hours and recording with both this will change.
Yeah I am a Carol Ann junkie i have a Tucana 2 & 3, OD2, OD3, Jb100 Red,Tex 50. Last but not least JB100 serial #001 this is the one Joe used on the first Royal Albert Hall dvd which I purchased from Joe. The JB100 serial number001 along with Joes gibson Karona 1983 explorer, the mate to his flying V also used in the first RAH dvd, which I own are some of my prized gear pieces.
Keep the blues alive
cheers Ron
