Topic: Joe's new pick???

Saw the show in Clearwater last  weekend. Incredible rock show!!! I didn't think Joe's tone could get any better, but I think he sounded better than I've ever heard (and I've seen him over 20 times). I don't know if it was a better mix, sound system, or that new Dumble in the mix, but it was loud, thick, clear and dirty all mixed into one. Don't miss this show if you have the chance to see it. It seemed to me there was more jamming, extended  guitar and keyboard solos with Derek in the mix. Kind of a Deep Purple feel, or maybe Joe's homage to the late great Jon Lord? It was great.

All that aside, I was lucky enough to be sitting in the 3rd row, and I think I noticed that Joe is no longer using a Jazz III pick. It look like a standard size, nylon pick. I wonder if Joe went back to the old standard and why.

Hahaaa!

Re: Joe's new pick???

Heh, the gold pick is about the only Joe sig item that is not available for purchase, I am lead to believe?!?

I seem to remember at his last show here in Oz, he mentioned that the gold ones were not available for general purchase and were a true 'collectors item'.  At the end of the show, Joe and co. still threw out the older Red Jazz III picks into the crowd...

Pick tins with the gold picks are available from the JB store. I've bought some, they're great. I can't tell the difference with the red ones, but they're a fun item.

Re: Joe's new pick???

I was lucky enough to get 1 lonely Gold pick in the London Ontario show back in May 2013,
I'm hoping to see if I can grab a couple more this coming May 24, 2014 show in Toronto Ontario.

but I find the pesky JazzIII picks sort of tough to hold (need more practise)
I find Dava picks are pretty much the same size, the tips are about the same material but the grip is fantastic.

Re: Joe's new pick???

I have used JBs Gold Herco's as my main picks for the last year and have abandoned the red Jazz 3s that I used for years.

I bought them from the JB store and find the Gold ones a bit more tactile, slightly thicker and less brittle plastic than the Red Jazz 3s. The Gold ones also seem to stick to my fingers and are a bit warmer sounding than the red ones to me.

I really like them..

Re: Joe's new pick???

Sorry for the resurrection of this post but I wanted to know if I have been seeing things.  For the most part Joe plays with a standard pick but I swear when I saw him live that he used a thumb pick for one or two songs during the acoustic set.

It could be an optical illusion and what I think is him playing with a thumb pick is just him playing with his thumb and holding the pick in his fingers.

I've watched videos but haven't found one clear enough to know for sure. Does anyone know if he's using a thumb pick now and then?

Recently bought his picks from the JB store.  I gave a tin to a friend who loves them so much he dumped the Fender picks he was using and switched to Joe's.

Re: Joe's new pick???

I just recently converted a friend from Fender Mediums to the Jazz III's. He has one red JB pick and it will not leave his sight. cool

Same with my friend. He was using Fender Mediums and then tried out the Jazz III's.  He likes the Jazz III's a lot better. Said he played a whole hour with one and it just felt better than the Fender.

I haven't tried them myself because I just started learning how to play guitar.

Re: Joe's new pick???

I like the carbon fiber max-grip version Jazz III.

Re: Joe's new pick???

For a long time I favoured small thick picks and was using the Dunlop 3mm stubby. I tried the Jazz III but couldn't get on with it. For the last year or so I have been using the Dunlop .73 Ultex which I like more than any other pick I've used.

Re: Joe's new pick???

Some of you might dig the Petrucci jazz III. Its size is right in between the jazz III and the jazz IIIxl. It's matted where you put your fingers and smooth where it hits the string.
