Topic: Ty Curtis

Has anyone here seen this kid live?  Reminds me of a more polished Jonny Lang - powerful singer.  His new self-titled album came out in late May and is worth checking out.  Ty's guitar playing is very smooth and the songwriting well above average.  I'm in a ballad mood and the ones on this disc are hitting on all cylinders.  There's also a reggae meets the blues number that gets my fingers snapping.

http://youtu.be/vr6HRuJV3kk   A lot of energy on this song.  Reminds me for some reason of vintage Who with the passion playing.  Also like the camera girl on the right trying to keep still (and failing).  Just a great little song.

Part of me wishes you hadn't said that about a new album - I'm already going to be so stretched through October, all cheques are going to be by Bank of Dunlop.

That said, I have Ty's previous 3 albums, Stubborn Mind, Down On My Luck and Cross That Line, and he's certainly grown in confidence and ability, though there's not a "clunker" to be heard. I don't know if we'd be able to lure him from Oregon to the UK or Europe, but he'd get my support.

Re: Ty Curtis

I might have  posted about him before, but Ty is an extremely talented musician.  The new album has some fine songs although I wish some possessed the energy of the video I included.  Do you by chance know the song title and album its off of?

Re: Ty Curtis

It was on the tip of my tongue until a couple days ago, but there's a distinct similarity with Ty Curtis and Davy Knowles.  Great singers, guitarists and songwriters.  I heard from Mike DK has a new release coming out soon without Frampton this time.

Re: Ty Curtis

Ty Curtis - Ty Curtis.

Finally managed to get hold of this album after your recommendation. This guy’s a bit of a hidden secret, despite this being his 4th album. Ty’s currently based in Oregon and seems to be in some sort of isolation, like Duncan’s bands in Scotland. Maybe they’ve closed the Oregon Trail or perhaps there’s a federal law saying you can only go there the long way round, head east.

Anyway, for this album, Ty moved down to Texas to record and has come up with another worthy album, though maybe a little too eclectic for purists. I Know is a good kick-off track, leading straight into an album highlight, Late Night Wonder. Don’t Know You is a cool acoustic track, calming things down for the ballad Playing My Part.. Then we get a touch of the Mitch laddie funks, Feel What I Feel which has a false ending going into what could be a separate, more 80s style instrumental passage with a very funky groove. Then we get an unexpected style change for the reggae flavoured How Was I To Know. before returning to a country rocker Up And Gone. Mellowing out again to No One Ever Said, we get a little funky again for Some Kind Of Situation before a very powerful, soul tinged ballad Baby Blue.

Ty has a strong voice and great technique on guitar, but I think the experimentation may catch a few folk out, though the songs are pretty strong. Still, some good things have come from the Pacific Northwest over the years; The Ventures, Jimi Hendrix, Heart, Nirvana…..

From the studio - I Know http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ihrn48_8MwY

I have heard that Ty is looking to take over the reigns of his management himself and that a permanent relocation to Texas may be on the cards if he can put enough money together, to try and gain a bit more exposure. Hope it works out, the lad is a serious talent and deserves the breaks.

Re: Ty Curtis

Ty Rocks ! I live in Salem, been seeing Ty for years,  and his northwest shows are always sold out...He's fantastic, one of those great local Blues acts that will most likely remain just that. If, however, you want to listen to Oregon's very best guitarist ever, look up anything Terry Robb has done...The single most incredible guitarist I have ever seen, both acoustic and electric..a-mazing !!

Cheers Murf.... Next time you see Ty, and looks like plenty of opportunity coming up, tell him there's a few Brits wish him well, and while it looks like slim chance of him getting over here, we live in hope.....

Thanks for the tip on Terry Robb; looks like some further investigating to be done; gotta love this forum for that.
