Re: Ball Peen Hammer or Dirt In My Pocket?

Well, I've decided after playing both songs for some of my friends, they decided Dirt In My Pocket. They just thought Dirt In My Pocket was a better song. And since that one has slide, I'm going to do that, but instead of doing the acoustic solo-ish part, I'm going to go into a verse of If I Had Possession Over Judgement Day. I'll let you guys know how talent show goes. They typically go with typical acoustic b.s., but I think this will work.

Good luck Deezer! Both songs are great and I like it when an artist puts there own spin on the song anyway.

blues deluxe! blues deluxe! blues deluxe! blues deluxe!

We're with you on Blues Deluxe.  That song is THE first song we ever heard Joe Bonamassa play and that was August 2005 when he was opening for BB King's 80th Birthday tour in Seattle, WA.  Prior to that we had NEVER heard of Joe.  After that song, we were Joe fans forever!  Blues Deluxe drew us right in.  Of course, it was the way Joe played it; he has magnificent talent and stage presence.  I couldn't get out of my seat fast enough to hoof it over to the CD stand to buy the Blues Deluxe CD!  :-)  Oh yeah!

The last two CDs (You & Me and Sloe Gin) are also awesome.  After hearing Blues Deluxe, getting the CD, and listening to it nonstop, when the next CD came out, we were saying, "hmmmmmmmmmm, what's Joe doing?"  Then after listening to each song on You & Me a zillion times, we're saying, "Yeah, Joe knows what he's doing!"  Then, Sloe Gin came out, with the new band and different songs, and we said, "hmmmmmmmm, what's Joe up to now?"  Then after listening to each song on "Sloe Gin," we're saying, "Oh, yeah, Joe absolutely knows what he's doing and we LOVE it!"

But, Joe, don't forget Blues Deluxe (that awesome song) and thanks for playing it as an encore at Jazz Alley in December 2006 when we requested it.  WE are your loyal fans and Street Team members, rooting for you all the way in Seattle!

well Deezer. I didn't reply originally because of a few reasons
-I like both songs about the same and two of my favorites off Sloe Gin so I was torn between having to choose one
-I'm not a real player or singer yet so I have no way to measure which would be harder to pull off well
-I truly hate getting advice even when it helps me so I hold back on giving it - whether or not thats obvious, I really do.

but since you did ask for opinions here....

I hope my suggestions help you make your decision.

I think the one that you have the most connection to is going to come out of you the best. I think it will display your best talent.
I have heard you say a few things about Dirt in My Pocket, and for that and other reasons I get a feeling that one is simply more 'you'. I only know you thru here though so thats just a feeling.

To choose it because someone said Joe likes it better isn't quite enough reason for me. Remember, they are both off of Joe's cd. Either one will show your respect and admiration. You have gone over and above the call to duty showing Joe what you are willing to do for him and Joe has gone out of his way to let you know his appreciation of what you personally have done for him. I can provide the details there but I doubt you need them. Let me know if you do. I'd be surpised if you choosing one over the other (especially if you plan to do both) would make that much difference to Joe. Please though don't let that make your decision, I can't begin to explain how all the deep hard arse kissing going on 'round here makes me feel so much less dorky for my regular air kiss style.

Dirt in My Pocket is Joe original. I fantasize that choosing it would help give Joe more confidence to compose more originals. I say that because I really do dig all the stuff Joe does but the originals inherently are more of a gift and I anticipate the future originals more than future covers. Because they are both so heavy and cool , complete, and nice sounding, I wonder if the reason Joe likes Ball Peen that much more and does so many covers, is due to some lack of confidence in his own writing.

Basically I think if you are happy with your performance on both, that if there is one you have a stronger personal connection to, it will enhance your talent for the show.

I am jealous you can play and sing either of these!
and I got to say I would love to hear Joe do Dirt live all electrically - maybe you could inspire him by playing it electrically if you also see that in the song. he might even cover a "Deezer" riff one day.....

However you decide, please let us hear it if you record it!

GOOD LUCK smile !!!!!!

I also love Joes originals,I don"t think or hope its not that he doesnt have confidence in writing. It is obvious that the man has written a ton of great songs so far. Maybe it just harder or more time consuming to come up with great new songs.Or maybe he just wants to put his own stamp on songs he loves.
