On the pickup radio podcast Blues Deluxe Roots, Joe said that his album 'So Its Like That' was not a very good album.
But in my opinion I think that it is a great album, every single song on the album is fantastic and I think it is one of his best albums.
Does anyone know why Joe doesn't like this album? and can you tell me what you think of So It's Like That.
Obviously I can't speak for Joe, but IMHO his writing, singing, playing and tone are better in later albums. I only really like a handful of tunes on SILT. I'm guessing he felt pressure to go in a direction he didn't want to go in, and didn't have the passion of complete ownership and authorship he has nowadays.
Different strokes for different folks. To me, Dust Bowl is his best album - some folks don't like it. Driving Toward the Daylight is one of my least favorite of his albums, other people like that best. It's okay, that's what's great about Joe's library - something for everyone. His worst albums are still better than some artists' best!

But also 1,000% with Jane on SILT - totally love love love this record. She's right, it's one of a kind.
Seems like the SILT debate will always be around.It was my first Joe album and what got me hooked.Like Jane I prefer the rock side of things and it really fits in a good place within the rock music spectrum.
It is on its in little island compared to the rest of Joes catalogue so maybe it was a step away from what really wanted to play.As much as I am all on board with his music today I would love to hear Joe do a more true rock record.I realize that probably won't happen unless in some kind of future side project.
I think it has to do with the record company and them trying to get him to be more pop and similar to other young gun guitarists big at that time etc.
Isn't that what Kevin does with Joe's records, try and challenge him and give him different musical directions. Like how Black Rock is a hard rock style album and DSOB is a funkier style

Difference between encouraged and pushed/forced perhaps?

Well said, totally agree with your premise.
I wanted to follow up and make sure i say i was not trying to say Joe's other albums are the same old blues by any means, its just that with more traditional stuff in places and being labeled blues i think its harder to get it out there to the world and be accepted as a whole work. the independent station that plays Joe often plays the blues numbers or in a blues show or what not. not that there is anything wrong with that whatsoever, it just doesn't fit the rock and roll fantasy that SILT created in my mind

SILT is a great album, but probably down the list a ways on my list of favorites, which only speaks to the amount of great music Joe has put forth.

Yeah, I think that is the definitive version. It's the horns that makes it for me, to the point that any other version without the horns just sounds. . . wierd! lol.

The version at Shepherds Bush on TDF is also epic. One of my faves from those 4 shows.
