Re: Live at Rockpalast
I have been thinking about this in the context of the question as posed. Would Joe be where he is today if he stayed in the original power trio format and if not why?
What got me thinking about this was a recent concert I attended by an artist I'm not going to name but he is considered a great guitar player. His band has toured for the last 20 years and I saw them in 2003 not long after seeing Joe for the first time. While having a head start on Joe's career his growth has not kept pace with Joe. In 2003 maybe 200 people and last week maybe 600. The band has not changed during that time and to tell you the truth the show hadn't really changed either. I asked myself as a casual fan would I ever even bother to see them again? Probably not.
I damn near cried upon hearing that Kenny Eric and Joe were going to be no longer together. I also thought Joe was making a mistake even though I knew that he had to make the move I just thought that Rockpallast was going to be the catalyst for a wave of new fans and that would be what they would expect. The safest move he could of made would of been to just carry on with Kenny and Eric and many people would love to see them grow old together. I'm afraid that Joe's career would of at some point stagnated. Like the artist mentioned above. Maybe max out at 5 or 6 hundred people a night which is dang good for a blues act with a $25 ticket price which is a bargain for a fan but I'm not so sure I would still be here.
I have grown to like the change. I think it is exciting to see what the next chapter will be. If Joe is a book his career is a real page turner. He has grown exponentially and has the freedom to do so many things. Without the RAH 2009 I don't believe there would be a RCFP, BCC or a Beth Hart or a Muddy Wolf with The Three Kings coming soon. Leaving the power trio was the toughest thing Joe had to ever do and it took a leap of faith. I really believe if he hadn't done that he wouldn't be where he is today. The speculation as to what is up next and the anticipation of the next tour keeps me interested. Joe never just phoning it in. Putting it all on the line every tour. He knows he has to be as good or better each time he goes out there. If anything it may put undo stress on him but then some people work better when the pressure is on and it sure seems to be the case with Joe.
