Topic: Sorry, the lateset cd is not for me.

I have every cd by Joe.
This latest one doesn't turn me on.
Not liking the brass band.
The slow introduction's to some songs.
Just the basic style.
Wish you would do more heavy blues/classic rock type songs.
No keyboard either.

Re: Sorry, the lateset cd is not for me.

Several of the new songs were on the set list for Dallas last night. The tunes you heard on the CD took on new life in longer form.

Re: Sorry, the lateset cd is not for me.

My first run through the CD, there were 3 songs I loved.
I've probably listened about 20 times through and other songs have definitely grown on me after hearing them a few times. I don't think there's a bad track, but none of the others have caught up to 3 that grabbed me my first time through.
If you don't like horns or keyboards, I guess I can understand your not liking this cd.

Re: Sorry, the lateset cd is not for me.

One of things I admire about Joe is that he does not want to make clones of his albums.
So each album does not sound like the previous one.I would say that this album in particular follows that process. When I think  of some of the great bands such as Led Zep,Stones,The Who,ect made albums that had their sound but were also different.
I wasn't sure what to expect with all the horns on this record.I like horns but I have to admit that with Joe it's really all about the guitar. I mean his special talent is what sets him apart from the rest.Adding horns kinda changes the sound from the more raw blues rock we are used to.Thats not a bad thing. It just a different thing to me.
DSOB  is not a Blues Deluxe or BOJH.
The main thing for me is do I like the songs ?I do.

I listen to the whole cd and enjoy every song.
It's interesting to see that there are fans who think this is one of his best albums and others who don't care for it so much.
Just goes to show how we all have different tastes even though the people here are all into this style of music.

Different strokes for different folks.  To me, it's one of his best albums - right up in the top 3.  Over time it may even be my #1.  I can see where it isn't up some peoples' alleys, though.  A friend of mine (a metalhead who I turned on to Joe a couple years ago) doesn't like it as much, either.  He's more into the hard rock/heavy blues thing.  I like the eclecticism though.

Re: Sorry, the lateset cd is not for me.

Get back my tomorrow ? (Might have it wrong, but it's the 'tomorrow' song) Is one of my alltime Joe favorites. It's really well crafted and I just love the riffs. Hey baby grabbed me from the Itunes sample, I should check out the original. I LOVE the brass band, black irish eyes is just an allround stomper.... love it all!

With Joe more than a bunch of artists I could name, you can really hear him and the ideas evolve/develop between different albums which is really cool. Joe live is still the best Joe you can get.

Re: Sorry, the lateset cd is not for me.

I have to say, I really love this record, listened to it just after one of Joe's concerts and instantly fell in love. In my opinion the horns are great and really give it a funky kind of feeling. Keyboard in my opinion gives Joe's music a bigger sound, (sadly Arlan is not part of the band anymore).
I don't know, that's just my opinion, this is the same guy who thinks Black Rock is one of Joes best albums and isnt a big fan of Dust Bowl.

Re: Sorry, the lateset cd is not for me.

I like this album a lot. I am a big fan of the horn section and Reese Wynans (who is fabulous in person) on keyboards.  That said, I can see why other of Joe's fans who are used to a more pounding power guitar (think John Henry) would be disappointed. After the Muddy Wolf shows, I am all in on Joe with horns and a blues/jazz/funk sound. In person you still get tons of Joe playing and soloing but with a richer more diverse sound. Music is such a personal thing I am not intending to criticize others tastes.

FUNK is Good Stuff.................:)

And so castles made of sand melts into the sea, eventually.........

Re: Sorry, the lateset cd is not for me.

I've listened to it a couple more times and still feel the same way.
There's a couple songs that are ok.
Might be my least favorite cd from Joe.

Re: Sorry, the lateset cd is not for me.

"Different strokes for different folks"
I really like the album and more importantly I like the fact that Joe changes things up with his releases. Joe's catalog of music gives everyone such a wide range of choices to listen to. He keeps things fresh this way and therefore doesn't fall into a rut like so many other musicians where it is just the same type of sound over and over. Keep the diversity coming Joe!

Re: Sorry, the lateset cd is not for me.

Totally subjective. Different Shades of Blue is now my favorite JB album. There was one song I was not sure I liked at the beginning, but the more I listened to it the more I liked it, which often happens to me when I'm unsure if I like a song when I first hear it.
I love every song and there are a couple that remind me of New Orleans and I love that. I just like this particular collection of songs and the arrangements are fabulous. I listen to it every day to and from work. I'm pretty much addicted to it.

Re: Sorry, the lateset cd is not for me.

Terry12, funny, this cd kind of reminded me of Blackrock too, in a small kind of way, but I could hear it. Not  a big fan of Blackrock, but I do like this cd......

Re: Sorry, the lateset cd is not for me.

I was just trying it again while cruising down the freeway.
I asked my wife if she liked it. "Not really, for the same reasons you don't."
"There are a couple nice guitar solo's, but I think I'll throw it out the window."
She dared me.
I'm going to listen to previous JB cd's.

Re: Sorry, the lateset cd is not for me.

SlyStrat,

I think the secret sauce you miss is the sound of the steam locomotive.

Where I live is the documented birthplace of Boogie Woogie -- the predecessor to most of the Blues. Boogie Woogie came out of the logging camps and the railroads that made large scale logging possible. Although it is easier to hear the sounds of the  trains when played on a piano, you can hear Leadbelly play it on his guitar. BTW, Leadbelly lived here when he was a young adult. In fact, he may have done his first jail time here.

The website would not allow me to post a link. There is an excellent example on YouTube. Search for "Leadbelly - The Gallows Pole".

I'd love it if Joe would come to Marshall TX to write his next cd. That would be powerful. He really does better without the extra input from the "professional writers". I think their input created a dilutive effect. Luckily, Joe reconstituted the tunes to a greater strength when he performed them live.

Re: Sorry, the lateset cd is not for me.

I don't know, these songs, as he plays them and they evolve 'in the wild' on the road, may end up great.  My first listen, I had mixed feelings.  It's getting better all the time.  I hope he plays Scarlet Town for us  in a couple of weeks, haunting guitar work.

Hey oldbill.I think Scarlet town is another track where people love it or don't.I agree it has some cool haunting guitar work.something tells me it won't be in the set list though.

No worries either way. I understand that not all of my output is for everyone.  I take risks and often challenge my audience.  I am honored that you participate here and you are always welcome with your feedback.

Cheers
