Thought I'd get back to the drawing thing since I've been lazy lately. Here is Joe with Principal Skinner. A pencil sketch because I feel like I am screwing up the colored ones. Need to practice a bit more.

Very nice again Natasha! I don't think you colored ones are screwed up at all!

Thanks Gary. It's the heads on some of the colored ones that I feel I've messed up. It's hard to redo those when you make a mistake. I was almost ready to trash this current one. That mouth and nose were driving me up a wall. Took forever to get them right, but once I got them worked out the rest moved along nicely.

Re: Drawings of Joe & his guitars

Have you ever thought of doing something on a larger scale?

Re: Drawings of Joe & his guitars

I haven't really considered doing things larger. The pads I use are 11x14 which seem big for me right now. I actually tend to enjoy trying to do things on a smaller scale. I was just practicing with the color pencils yesterday and did a small (3 1/2 x 5) drawing of Joe's newest guitar, Carmelita (The Claw). She has a gorgeous top on her and I wanted to see if I could replicate it. I tweeted the image last night and Joe totally made my day when he replied, "nice work!!!" If that isn't a motivator to keep doing this I don't know what is, lol.

Re: Drawings of Joe & his guitars

Larger scale tends to work better if you move to some sort of painting - illustrating with pencil or colored pencil really lends itself more to work on a smaller scale. Filling large space with colored pencil can get pretty daunting, since pencils are smaller and dont come in different sizes (as opposed to painting where you can go from extremely refined to super broad depending on your brush). Pastels are fun too, but might be difficult to do for detailed work like portraits and guitars, they're basically like professional crayons.

You're doing great work, keep at it :-)

Re: Drawings of Joe & his guitars

Very nice job on Carmelita, that must be a difficult effect to achieve, but you nailed it!

Re: Drawings of Joe & his guitars

Very nice again on the "Claw"!
You know doing everyone of Joes guitars could keep you busy for quote a whole lol! unless they were all in one picture. Then you would  need to go to a larger scale!

Ohmygosh!  The Claw!  Love it!

Is it strange that I tried to zoom in on the drawing to see what settings you drew the knobs and pick-up selector at?    :0

You guys crack me up! I wish I could have gotten those knobs more precise, but hard to get fine detail with colored pencils and a small drawing. The painted guitar coasters I did last Spring were a bit more detailed. Easier to do with tiny brushes and paint pens smile

Those are coasters?!?!  Now how cool is that?

I consider myself to be a Coaster, based on where I live though, not because people have the urge to put their drinks on me!

Um, Joe?  Why are you not marketing these yet?  Or better yet, Natasha!

That's awesome! Would love to hear a review of what you think of the show since it will be your first "joe show!" I have to warn you, once you see him live it's hard to go long periods of time without seeing him again! Just my experience lol smile
