Topic: Sydney - 14 September 2014

Really one of the best shows I've ever seen. Sound was great throughout, unlike the problems I read about in the reviews from Auckland, linked on it's thread.

Interesting that the acoustic set had 8 songs in 45mins and the electric 10 in 90 mins - shows how extended some were with instrumentals. I'm guessing John Henry went for 20 mins.

I loved the counterpoint of how almost thrashing parts of acoustic versions could be and how light and delicate Joe's held back solos, harmonic plays and volume swells could be in the electric set.

So, three from the new album. Special mention to Joe's strong a capella vocals (apart from a low Sherinian pad behind) in the Black Dog-esque, call-response of  Oh Beautiful! - which I suspect is destined become a long time live set staple.

Acoustic set:
Intro music Hayseed Dixie - Highway to Hell
1. Woke Up Dreaming (Joe alone)
2. Seagull
3. Jelly Roll
4. Black Lung Heartache
5. Happier Times
6. Jockey Full Of Bourbon
7. Dislocated Boy
8. Athens To Athens

Electric set:
1. Dust Bowl
2. Oh Beautiful!
3. I Gave Up Everything For You ‘Cept The Blues
4. Who’ Been Talking
5. Blues Deluxe
6. Love Ain’t A Love Song
7. Sloe Gin
8. Ballad Of John Henry
--------
9. Django
10. Mountain Time (Mats Wester and Gerry O'Connor rejoined the electric band)

Only thing I could have done without, was Joe's dissing of Black Country Communion in the Derek Sherinian introduction. I still love what they did.

Re: Sydney - 14 September 2014

Judging by the description of the running order and setlist in the following review, you'd be forgiven for thinking that the reviewer was at a slightly different gig, or slightly drunk...?!

http://themusic.com.au/music/livereview … ael-smith/

"Opening with a solo slice of countrified speedpicking wizardry titled Palm Trees, Helicopters And Gasoline, Bonamassa was then joined by three members of the group that had featured on his 2013 An Acoustic Evening At The Vienna Opera House European tour and DVD – fiddler/mandolinist Gerry O’Connor, Swedish nyckelharpa or keyed fiddle player Mats Wester and percussionist Lenny Castro, along with his Black Country Communion keyboards player Derek Sherinian – for a set that ranged from alt.country through the blues (with a bodhran yet) to swamp funk, the final number featuring solos from each that brought elements of each player’s respective country – Ireland, Sweden, Cuba, the Southern US – as well as some flamenco from Bonamassa – into a country blues.

A short intermission and on came the electric band – Sherinian and Castro again, along with bass player Carmine Rojas and drummer Tal Burgman – and the room went nuts. Accompanied by Sherinian, Bonamassa opened with the brooding Woke Up Dreaming, before bringing the band in with a Bad Company cover, Seagull, and it was on for young and old as he took the audience through cuts from previous albums, Dust Bowl, The Ballad Of John Henry and Dislocated Boy among them, as well as a couple from the new album, Different Shades Of Blue – I Gave Up Everything For You Except The Blues, Oh Beautiful, Love Ain’t A Love Song – stretching things out, bringing the band down while he teased notes out of his guitar played just above a whisper, then roaring back in, loud and proud, the consummate showman."

Even fools say something worthwhile now and again

Glad to hear you had a great time! I really hope Joe keeps Happier Times in the setlist. I am dying to see that song played live, my favorite!
