Topic: Chantel McGregor - New album coming soon, new tour material tonight

Chantel has been giving regular updates on Facebook in the last couple of months with her progress on the next studio album, album no. 2. The great news is that the songs are now all completed. No news so far on when Chantel will be able to get into the studio or when the album is likely to get released. Her first album was one of the classic debut albums, and with Chantel's talent as a singer/ songwriter, vocalist and rock guitarist, she's sure to deliver another great album. Chantel herself is very excited about her new songs and announced from the stage at Cambridge Rock Festival last month that the new album will soon be on its way.

Great artist, love her voice and her style.  Her version of Voodoo Chile is impressive.

Re: Chantel McGregor - New album coming soon, new tour material tonight

Chantel played the New Crawdaddy Blues Club, Billericay on Friday, 5th December to a packed house and left the audience mesmerised by her effortless playing. Despite having the tail end of a heavy cold, Chantel’s voice was clear and strong with a good range. As they say, the show must go on. smile

I was surprised to hear so many songs from the new album which, although in the can, won’t be released until May/June time next year. The set list comprised roughly 50% new material, which included several rocking numbers with strong riffs that should go down well with most punters. It will be interesting to see how these new songs develop on the road over the coming months and years.

Chantel played two new semi-acoustic numbers from the new CD, Anasthesia and (I think) Your Fever while the rhythm section of Keith and Richie left the stage for a few minutes. The seated audience were captivated but, regrettably, there were a few ignorant people only there for the cheap beer and talking non-stop at the bar during these songs. I’m looking forward to hearing the studio versions of these songs to hear them as they were meant to be.

The rest of the set comprised material from Chantel’s current CD, including a sublime twenty minute Daydream that had many on their feet at the end. Chantel’s playing has definitely progressed since I saw her last and is totally effortless. More than once it sounded like there were two guitars playing and it wasn’t simple stuff either. Mrs W, remarked that it looked like Chantel was almost going through the motions. This wasn’t meant as a criticism, far from it, as she was very impressed by Chantel’s fretwork skills on the guitar. Perhaps it just highlights Chantel’s proficiency on the guitar and being 90% through the current tour. I’m sure picking up the guitar at the age of three helps too!

As I mentioned in my review of Aynsley’s gig in the summer, this venue is far from the best in that the toilets are on one side of the room, the bar is opposite and there is an almost constant stream going backwards and forwards in front of the stage – not good for serious music fans. Plus the afore-mentioned bar which stretches almost the whole length of the room alongside the seating. I therefore avoided taking any video until the encore. Due to the lighting the picture starts off rather blue but improves for the second number. It’s definitely worth watching all through as the sound is good and has had me bopping along to the superb playing. The first is a Satriani number Chantel introduced as an instrumental but if anyone knows the title, please let me know. The same goes for the second number. Any ideas Steve? Anyway, enjoy.

The first one is called Summer Song. Our locals The Richard Head Band played it often until they split up in 2002.

Cheers Kenny. I always have trouble with instrumental titles. I hope it whets your appetite for later this week when you'll be seeing Chantel.

Thanks.

Saw Chantel for the first time last night and was most impressed. Especially as I met Chantel and her dad in the pub before the show and she liked my Opeth T-Shirt smile

Re: Chantel McGregor - New album coming soon, new tour material tonight

Caught up with Chantel & band, complete with new bassist Colin Sutton last night at Durham Gala Theatre. First time in a while as missed most of the winter shows from the back-end of last year.

Have to report, reading Phil's last review comment about the heavy cold - Chantel has finally shaken it off; I got the impression it had hung round so long it almost had a name....

Anyway, down to business and a more "gothy" look for our girl, which really suited the darker & more sombre edge to the newer material; but releax, there's no 4ft black dyed backcomb or tube of mascara round the eyes, just yet. However, the show opener Caught Out did feature some ponderous "Sabbath-esque" drumming from Keith and plenty of minor key power-chords, which kind of set the tone for the evening. By any means though, it wasn't all so melancholy, Daydream still had it's wistful moments though Fabulous does have a bit more edge in this sort of context.

Home & Anaesthesia were the acoustic break, allowing Keith & Colin a break; these were very ethereal, especially compared to the electric stuff, but I expect with the violins and cellos mentioned in the introduction, they'd be "goose bump" moments to look forward to.

Back on stage, things were cranked-up again for a great charge to the finish; mainly newer stuff, but very confidently handled. One things for sure, if you were expecting Chantel to go "bubblegum", forget it, this girl's got teeth - Fangs even!

Durham Gala, super venue if you like seating. Hardest thing to get over though is the timing: when you see 7:30pm on a ticket, you expect that as door opening time, not kick-off. That meant, playing through, Chantel was finished by 9:15pm and after a quick chat and scan of the merch, I was leaving Durham by 9:45 - usually the time most bands hit the stage and find their stride. I suppose on the flip side, any bands who play Durham Gala - and don't get me wrong, the sound, lighting and facilities are great - you'll get an early night.

Set List:-
Caught Out; Burn Your Anger; Like No Other; Southern Belle; Lose Control; Daydream; Fabulous; Eternal Dream (?); Home; Anaesthesia; Kiling Time; Freefalling; I'm No Good For You; Your Fever; Walk On Land; Take The Power (encore).
