I've sworn by them for years, and in fact I still have my original set. They're like the Fender Stratocasters of colored pencils ;-)

Those are the ones I got 
It's definitely a learning process using them. Not sure I'm very adept at the whole thing. We'll see.

One thing you can do with them, as opposed to other colored pencils, is to use your fingers to smooth out and even smudge colors together. Looks like from the drawings that you posted you have a great concept of shading - the smudging can help push that further :-)

As a former arts student and now arts teacher I agree too: Your drawings are an hommage a Joe - very well done. Love them. He will be looking forward meeting you next time. (Just a thought...) Let`s dream: Joe sitting as your model for hours and hours without any Motion, that would be fun...
Thanks! Yeah that as a cool daydream, lol! I don't think Joe could sit still for any length of time and not start playing on the guitar he's holding, lol!
I tried to do one with colored pencils for the first time. My family thinks Joe has a funny expression on his face, but then he frequently has funny expressions when he is playing The photo it is drawn from is on my flickr site under the album Sioux City if you want to see it.
Look like a Joe playing expression to me. Well done. You are absolutely jammin on those 'Les Paul' pencils.

Thanks for the comments and encouragement. I feel like I could have done better with the face. The distance from nose to ear is a little greater than it should be. I probably should have picked a different photo with maybe not such an extreme expression, it really accentuated Joe's chin and hairline and the mouth was just a killer, can't tell you how many times that was redone. The colored pencils are tricky because they are very unforgiving. Really hard to erase mistakes and also tricky getting the proper skin and lip coloring. I think acrylic paint might be easier because you can paint over mistakes and there is an infinite color range. It's definitely all a learning process.

My wife did some drawings of Joe last year too, so I can appreciate how challenging that can be. Well done.

Congratulations. Passion is a wonderful thing. Add to it some talent and you come up with something wonderful like this. Life gets very difficult at times for all of us and to have something that can relieve your mind of all the stress and worry is priceless. I look forward all day long to getting home late in the evening and turning on my music and get away for at least a few minutes before I go to bed, get up, and do it all over again. Please keep it up, obviously all of us here on the forum enjoy your vision of Joe and it's got to be great for your soul.

i think you did a great job. Joe does have alot of different expressions for sure. it reminds me of how i often look at clouds in the sky and think to myself, even i was able to paint a scene that looked exactly like that, it would look fake. if that makes sense.
but i think you did great. i would just say maybe don't get any as tattoo unless it has a more typical expression, lol.
i am interested to see what you create next!

Well, I decided to have another go at the colored pencils. I think this one came out better. Especially with regards to the face.
