Seriously though, while musicians love to feed off of a live audience I can see how someone of his age would tire of long haul touring. I think he is at the stage where he would have as much fun playing to 50 as 5000. I suggest he does stop and just do a gig at a small club under an assumed name when he has the urge.

He would just need a minder, guitar, amp and a couple of mates. More fun for him and a huge buzz for the people that catch him. He doesn't need the dough, or the hassle.

That is why I caught him last Tuesday at the sold out SAP Arena in Mannheim where Joe will be playing 25, Sept.(88€) Once in a lifetime I wanted to experience a gig by EC. (110€) My seat neighbour heard him for the 10th time!

That's pretty much what I was thinking. Even the occasional sit-in with a younger player or a friend could possibly work as well.

He could be telling the truth this time. But I think he's made these comments before, and after a while, he's looking forward to touring again. So who knows what's gonna happen. If he does decide to end touring, then he's certainly earned that. Can't picture him giving up music altogether though.

PS NickelWound, SRV was inspired by American artists such as Lonnie Mack, Alberts King and Collins etc. There's a story of when brother Jimmy ripped into Stevey's playing describing him as sounding like Robin Trower. Stevey wasn't best pleased.

That's so true, but its something Clapton has never been really good at.

I caught a couple of his shows with Steve Winwood (2009?) and it was over an hour before Clapton even spoke.

I saw him 2 nights in a row with Elton John and his entire set including the dialogue was identical on both nights, seemed like it was scripted.

Only time I ever saw him really loose was him jamming in a club with Alexis Korner (but I think he'd had a few)

He didn`t speak only one word with the audience last Tuesday in Mannheim neither make a joke nor interact with the fans. Only playing with 1 encore.

I can relate to his state of mind. I worked the road more than 30 years and it gets to be a grind. Long times away from home, dealing with loneliness and eating hotel food, often alone which is the pits. The travel part has indeed become a chore and is what finally was the straw for me. It sounds like he's just going to slow down, still keep his hand in and maybe try to renew that spark.
