Forgive another newbie question from a newer Joe fan. Listening to the radio this AM and "Free Bird" was on. I've heard other single guitarists cover it and would be intrigued to hear how Joe might tackle it.
And, yes, I live in TN and know that in some states, Alabama in particular, it is probably against the law to cover Free Bird! 
I think it should be illegal to cover it, request it, shout it out during a show or play it on the radio in all states. Sorry it is an iconic song that has been worn out IMHO.

Will always feel oddly linked to Skynyrd. I had tickets to see them in Little Rock- was going to be the first show I ever attended- when they had the plane crash en route.

That bird been dunned caught, plucked, and crispy deep-fried and leather-like leftovers tossed O-U-T! Worn out IMTHO's as early as 1979. "Tuesday's Gone," now there's a enduring blues tune! again, IMTHO's.

Pretty sure Joe has not covered, but I have heard it shouted out from the crowd at quiet moments by some clown that thinks it's funny to do. I think it must of been from a scene in a movie. So I'm not sure how seriously I took this when reading it this morning while trying to shake the grogginess off and guzzle coffee between keystrokes.
I see you are a serious fan. I went to High School with some fans like you and they never understood how I viewed them. I thought of them as a late to the party Allman Brother Band wanabe's. I later softened my distaste for them because of other songs in their catalog like JJ Calles Breeze and I know a Little about Love. Those are my classic Skynard songs that I never tire of.
Let's just lock this one up, the direct answer should be "no".

The honky-tonkin' rockinger studio Call Me The Breeze with hornyswish...oh yeah! I also prefer Down South Jukin' over the better known (amusing 
) Gimme Three Steps. Don't Ask No Questions, and Four Walls Of Raiford more in the preference category for myself, also. But even though Tuesday's Gone may be a sort of passing nod to ABB, it's not as blatant a damn worthy bowing to them as T For Texas to my ears, it [Tuesday's Gone] is my version of their most iconic performance. There's a short Free Bird studio that is like the Kitty Hawk flight of the song, but............I prefer it!

"The yelling Free Bird has been going in for years I hear it all the time at shows.I think it stems from the Live Skynrd Album where it is caught on tape a fan yelling it out.
I am pretty much done hearing the song myself too.Just too darned overplayed on radio for so long.
I have heard it many times at Joes shows too.Its a tired joke now.Cat believe someone still thinks it clever to yell out.
Haven't seen anyone under 40 yell it out so there is hope for the future generation!
“what song is it you wanna hear”? was the call from the grammatically challenged Van Zant. Hence the reply...... as Gary says often shouted out during a pause in any stage show, - but not a serious request. I deny ever shouting it......
What ever next? A call for Joe to play “Smoke on the water”? Doh!
There have been stranger covers. At a Frank Zappa concert someone shouted out to play Whipping Post so the band learned it and it became a regular song in subsequent shows.
I like Freebird...gotta say I'm quite bored of Tuesday's Gone.

Went to see The Who in '73, got in the doors late, but caught the last couple of songs of the opening band whose name was an unintelligible mouthful. I was immediately taken aback by the 3 man guitar assault. The set ended with me in a dazed state of curiosity, just like the first time I heard Joe, when much to my surprise the crowd begged for more and got it. It was unusual for an opening act to play an encore, but they returned to the stage and unleashed the fury we all know now as Freebird. Been a fan ever since and can't even count the number of their shows I've seen since that night. Will be in Shreddy's hometown of Roseville on 8/15 to see yet another. There's a few "haters" here that refer to the present line-up as a "tribute" band, BFD!, Their music has withstood the test of time through all the adversity they have faced. There are many songs we'd all love to hear Joe cover, but I can't really put my finger on a Skynyrd song that would really fit JB other than Crossroads and T For Texas, which both are covers by Skynyrd already. Jimmie Rodgers wrote T For Texas, but the actual title is Blue Yodel.

Quite right too JDawg. I am another Skynyrd fan and see them whenever I can. Awesome band, good with the fans and great music. Noeone should ever do Freebird but them though.
