joe i uderstand what your saying in that you feel you need your own sound and you have it no matter what you use for an axe,it's you're expression that sets you apart i play both lps and strats ,its the mood im in that makes me want to play one or the other not just the sound.there are not to many guitar players impress me but you have the talent that every guitar player out there desires.everybody is looking for a sound so what is the sound ,sound is nothing without the ability to express it and you are doing that in good fashion .so keep them both they serve you wellin your playing.

I know for me, it's great to use all different styles of guitars. It gives you a wider scope of tones. I enjoy the semi-hollowbody tone I get out of my Ibanez Artcore AGS, and then the Strat and Tele sounds I get. Some songs sound better with a certain tone. You would have a heavy metal tone on a Texas blues song, you wouldn't have a Texas blues tone on a heavy metal song. You could make it work, but it would be better if you matched them up.

Yeah I prefer different guitars for different sounds, have always been a strat player until recently where I realised I sounded more like myself when I played a Les Paul.

warmoth sells kits now for the Variax guitar.  Those Line6 guitars feel so crappy and cheap - but the electronics has potential. It would be cool to drop those guts into a custom made warmoth neck and body. no more labels and a plethora of sounds.

Yeah although I have played things like that but they don't inspire me because its not just the sound of the guitar its also the feel of the guitar that dictates to how I play. I play a little differently on a Les Paul or a 335 or a Tele than I do on a Strat cos of the way they feel.

Dont get me wrong, that is true, but at what point do you feel what you hear?

A 1970 Twin Reverb is obviously going to feel different than a solid-state Peavey from the 80's...and that affects how I play. At some point the sound is going to change when the notes are played no matter how a guitar is comfortable.
Effects and amps play just as important of a role as a guitar, but of course I'd rather own 30 guitars than 30 amps.

On the other hand, a lot of people dislike LesPauls because they are so heavy. Those are the people  (and the people who play strats with humbuckers) that trade them in for Paul Reed Smiths. Ya know what I say? Play an Explorer, then the LP will feel much lighter. It's all perspective. Some people don't like Flying V's because you cannot play them sitting down very comfortably, yet due to the 'feel' you end up being differently inspired by the comfort and feel. Many people record sitting down, but play live standing up. Does standing or sitting affect the way we play? It does for me.
